What's your fav arcade shmup PCB w/ best eye-catch intro?
For our fellow shmuppers,
What's you favorite arcade shmup PCB with the best eye-catchy opening intro?
I'd have to say the best arcade shmup-based with cool-ass eye-catchy opening intro would have to be MVS version of Blazing Star's opening intro circa 1998...sets the pace for the shmup masterpiece that is the sequel to Pulstar. I like the rendered CGI animation combined with anime character artwork...it has a charm all of it's own. It's sized up at a whopping 346 megabit MVS cartridge. Although, others might say that Pulstar's better.
I remember the very first time I saw the MVS version of Blazing Star at a local arcade back in February of 1998 (that took nickels as form of credits for all it's arcade cabinets & even the pinball games as well -- it was called 'Nickel Play' in Modesto, CA but closed down in May of 1998 due to losing it's lease...was really the only local arcade that had any decent arcade shmup titles to play.) ^_~

I like the rack on that anime chick featured on the Blazing Star opening intro...so sexy skin tight suit she's wearing. A little bit of tillitation to spice things up, hmmm? ^_~circuitface wrote:I'm gonna have to agree with you there. The intro to Blazing Star is freakin' amazing. I remember me and my friend Myles just standing there in a bowling alley staring at it for like 15 minutes one day. Oh, and the teets.
Shmups, how BAD have you got it?

I second the Dimahoo!
And this is off-topic because afaik it's not a PCB, but I've been obsessed with the Blast Wind ULTIMATE DESTROYER intro. Don't you keep expecting the first dude to say "No! Go to star!" ?
Oh yeah, the Space Bomber intro is pretty good. I know there are some games with bad ass intros I've seen that I just can't think of.

Hey, I have a question about that actually.. I lived in Modesto for a summer and was always curious about a shop/storage facility that was never open.. but if you looked in the window you could see Tempest, a Spy Hunter pinball I think, and some other cabs. Was this the remnants of that arcade?PC Engine Fan X! wrote: it was called 'Nickel Play' in Modesto, CA but closed down in May of 1998 due to losing it's lease...was really the only local arcade that had any decent arcade shmup titles to play.) ^_~

Gekirindan's intro is one of my favorites. You see the characters zip into view, get a glimpse of one of the ships being readied to take off, and the giant CGI-rendered robot getting ready to grab the Earth with its claws.
Gekirindan's logo is well done- starting out fully gray, then having the red-yellow color gradient beamed onto it.
The music for this intro is awesome signature Zuntata stuff and fits it perfectly.

I really like Gun Frontier's intro - the storyline involving future gold diggers and bandits, along with the images of poor wild west folk mixes really well with the sound effects in the intro of screaming people and gunshots to really set up the game. Sure, it's got no fancy animation or even good looking digitized graphics, and it's even got some Engrish, but it still works.

Intro to Rayforce- she gets a mean look and hits the laser button with her thumb.
Dimahoo's hot.
I like the Shienryu intro
Soukyugurentai isn't so bad, but the ship launch sequence at the beginning is great!
I like Salamander 2 also.
Mars Matrix =A+++
Psyvariar is also great- "and then what happened!?"
Darius Gaiden isn't so bad.
G-Darius is great.

Lil' arcade shop-McHenry/Orangeburg intersection in Modesto

That shop you're talking about closed down about a year or two ago. It was on the famous McHenry/Orangeburg cross intersection. Actually, there was sign posted on the front window stating "If you're interested in the arcade games, please call this cell phone number" and wait for the guy to show up and show you what he had for sale. It was mostly for spare parts. He did have some full-sized arcade cabinets for sale as well.
I'm sorry that little arcade shop was not the remainants of the former 'Nickel Play' arcade.
Here's the complete list of arcade shmup uprights that were playable at this 'Nickel Play' arcade on McHenry Avenue in Modesto, CA (back in 1995 through 1998):
Donpachi
Strikers 1945
Raiden Fighters
Viper Phase 1 U.S.A.
MVS Blazing Star
R-Shark (crazy-ass Korean produced arcade shmup...played through the 4th loop before deciding to quit)

Really? I hafta dissent on that one...granted, I love Bakraid (probably my favorite Raizing shmup, and one of my Top 25), but I find the attract sequence, like most of the presentation, painfully generic..."Hey, there's some evil tanks and stuff...hey, there's the good guy planes! And they shoot and stuff! Yay!"neorichieb1971 wrote:I like the funky tunes from Bakraid alot.
