Looking For Gamecube Shmups
I'm going to pick up a used cube and the freeloader bootdisk which I guess allows for import games to run, like the dreamcast. My question is, other than chaos field, Ikaruga and Radilgy, are there any other shooters import or domestic that I should try to get my hands on? And can anyone recommend none shmup imports that I should pick up. Thanks, and this is by far the best gaming forum. No jerks just help.

Re: Looking For Gamecube Shmups
Unfortunately, I can't help it since this topic just begs for me to be jerky because the Cube sucks hard for shooters. There is no shooter that isn't available for another platform, and often better on said platform. Besides, don't even bother trying to use the little toothpick of a D-pad. Sure, maybe you have an arcade stick, but it's probably a PS2 or DC stick to begin with, in which case you ought to just buy the games on PS2 or DC.malcolm wrote:No jerks just help.
Ikaruga -> better on DC
Chaos Field -> available on DC
Radirgy (didn't know this was on GC) -> but it's on DC.
There's also:
Star Soldier -> also on PS2, and better on PSP
Space Raiders -> also on PS2 and cheaper.
Shikigami no shiro II -> on DC, PS2 (cheap! $15 for Asia version) and Xbox

My two cents on GCN shmup titles...
For malcolm,
You could also pick up GCN import of Star Soldier...there's really not that much of selection of shmup titles for GCN console -- only a handful of GCN shmup titles currently have been released to date. You'd have a better chance of finding a Gamecube Action Replay as it already has the Freeloader built-in.
Thr GCN version Chaos Field shmup title supports Progressive Scan output...perfect if you've a GCN console with Digital output port and a modded GCN Component Video Cable or Japanese GCN D-Terminal Cable to output in true VGA 31 kHz mode.
My suggestion is to pick up a Sega Dreamcast console as you can play larger selection of DC shmup imports on it with proper boot disc and if was made before November 2000 revision change (on Sega's part). ^_~

The situation is bleak, but there is one bright spot. Shiki II looks amazing on the GC, especially if you can hook it up with S-video cables. Two problems, though. It may not be worth the extra expense of importing it, since you can get the PS2 version dirt cheap. Also, if you're going to spend time playing shmups on the Cube you'll need the hori pad-- the pad is stiff but pretty good overall and not too expensive.

Yeah, the GameCube's not exactly a shooter machine. Most of my time with the thing's been spent playing other stuff (F-Zero!). However, the Ikaruga for it does come with a lot of replays and an improved practice mode, and it should be (as far as I know) available as a domestic release most places for pretty cheaply. But overall, if it's only shooters you're after, I'd probably go for a different system . . .

Well, nothing new here but:
- Ikaruga. I've got the jp version. Avoid the lousy PAL version!!
- Star Soldier. Tons of fun, frantic caravan modes.
- Chaos Field. Make your own opinion!
- Shikigami no Shiro II. Everyone but me loves this game.
- Radirgy GeneriC. Ordered! From what I've read, it's better than the PS2 version (less slowdowns and a nice exclusive scoring mode)...
Why oh why did all shmup developers despise the GC

None of the modes were removed from the Japanese version when it was released in the US and Europe. The available replays are still there... however, they are crap.Soldato J wrote:Guys, are there replays in the US version of Ikaruga cube? if so, I will move into find mode
You can D/L far superior replays for free or you could buy the Appreciate DVD.

Here are some suggestions for playing shmups on Gamecube...
One can either pick up a Hori Gameboy Player Digital Pad or a Hori Fighting Stick/Cube joystick for better control over the stock Nintendo Gamecube controller.
You might get lucky as I did, I managed to buy a brand new Hori Gameboy Player Digital Pad for a mere $10.00 USD at my local Game Crazy store last year. ^_~
-------------------------
The Hori Fighting Stick/Cube reminds me of the earlier Hori produced home game console-based joysticks like:
Hori Fighting Stick PC (for the PC Engine Duo -- 1st class arcade joystick due to it's all-metal based case + solid Sanwa arcade joystick mounted on the top of the base...is hefty & just about the same size & dimensions of the PC Engine Duo/Turbo Duo console itself -- one motherfucker of a PCE Duo joystick indeed! One will not find a better joystick than this one.) ^_~
Hori Fighting Stick PS (for the PSX -- just an all-metal bottom for stability whereas the top of this particular joystick is tough ABS plastic -- same statement applies to the Hori Fighting Stick SS for the Sega Saturn console.)
Unfortunately, none of the local video game shops in my area sell such a high quality Gamecube joystick such as the Hori Fighting Stick/Cube arcade-type of joystick...it has to be imported from an import gaming speciality shop. ^_~
--------------------------
For dave4shmups,
The answer to your question about using the optional Hori Gameboy Player Digital Pad is yes, it's compatible with all the Gamecube shmup titles...the only thing missing on it, is the analog stick setup -- you won't missing the analog stick at all. ^_~
--------------------------
The Ikaruga Appreciate DVD is a very good way to watch three different ace Ikaruga players show their "mad skills". Unfortunately, it's been out of print for a while now. ^_~

Speaking of things Nintendo, I'm sincerely hoping a few Sega Saturn games (i.e. Radiant Silvergun) make it to Wii.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I hope so too. That would drop the absolute arse out of the second/third hand market. All these opportunistic eBay leeches will get a rude shock.Blade wrote:Speaking of things Nintendo, I'm sincerely hoping a few Sega Saturn games (i.e. Radiant Silvergun) make it to Wii.
Ditto goes for the PC Engine (TurboGrafx) games. I'm getting sick and tired of the ludicrous prices seen on eBay where resellers are making more money off this stuff than the original copyright holders ever did.

It would not change anything. The original releases of the games (those on physical media) would still command high resale values.elvis wrote:I hope so too. While I respect your viewpoint, I think "need" when it comes to a Hori pad is a bit strong. I play both Ikaruga & Chaos Field on my GC w/ the standard controller & I have no problems. Same goes for the Mega Man Collection (yes, even w/ the annoying "button switch"). Anyway, for a gamer used to a SNES pad, that would be the ticket, but I think anyone can adapt to whatever pad the system comes with, if they give it a chance.

SNS III is Type-X. Type-X games have only been ported to PS2 and PC, thus far. Expect a PS2 port to follow the current announced PC port.Wayler9 wrote:BTW, does anyone believe Shikigami no Shiro III will see a GC release? I'd love to see that happen!![]()
I actually think there's a chance, Japan-only of course, now that SnS III will be released on the PC. A console conversion can't be that far behind...

Good point, but I don't think it's gonna happen. All Nintendo has said so far is that NES, SNES, N64, TG-16 and a "selection of the best of" Genesis games will be available on the Virtual Console. There's been no word at all from them indicating that we are going to see imports from any of those consoles, much less Saturn games. Radiant Silvergun would require the Wii to be able to read Saturn discs, otherwise you'd have to download the game onto a disc, which Treasure would have to approve.Kiken wrote:It would not change anything.
