are ps1 pads good for shmups?

Post by dexvr »

i'm looking for better options to play shmups since im starting to dislike ps4 pads for this genre and fighting games. Is the PS1 pad suitable for this or is there 3rd party ps1 pads that are better than the OEM ps1 pad? Any suggestion is welcome :)

The original PS1 dpad is going to feel stiffer than the PS4 d-pad. If you're looking for an upgrade to what you already have the PS1 controller ain't it.

Since you play both shmups and fighting games, get an arcade stick. You'll never want to touch another d-pad again.

I always hated playing shmups on the PS1/2 d-pad.

I'm not totally sure what you're playing on (PS1 with a controller adapter?) but if you'd prefer a pad to an arcade stick, I quite like the Hori Fighting Commanders. Not sure what the current "Octa" version is like though

The controller that came with my PS1 (xmas '97) had a really good d-pad. I could even pull off fighting game special moves with ease. It was one of the non-analogue pads, without any sticks. When I bought a dual-shock for Ape Escape and RE2, I noticed immediately that its d-pad was far harder to use effectively. So I kept, and used, that original controller for many years, with any game lacking analogue support.

PS1 pads generally aren't well-regarded for this purpose, so I assume I just got lucky. If there's any way you can use a JP-style Saturn controller with an adapter, you should definitely look into that.

I have a ps2 pad but it totally feels rly good for fgs cause ive been able to execute hard stuff, idk about the ps1 controller though. The ps2 saturn pads are 200, quite expensive i think i can do an investment with it, heard its very accurate

my execution overall on stick feels super off so i never bothered in trying it and it's very big. Pads are convenient for me now

The Street Fighter pads for PS1/2 were excellent, as are the Saturn PS2 pad and the Neo Geo PS2 pad. Of course, all work on the PS1.

I think they are, but I also think there are better options (saturn saturn saturn). Is there a reason you're focusing on the Sony pad family?

Standard PS1 and 2 pads really aren't very good for 2d games. I ended up picking up a stick for PS1 which works with my PS2 shmups too.

Sony ps3 sixaxis (not dualshock!) Is the best sony controller. You will need a brooks adapter to use it on a ps1/ps2 though.

I could’ve sworn that PS1 pads were sought after for fighting games… don’t a decent number of people swear by them?
Or am I thinking of something else…?

There was a dude that won an Evo with one:

I think they're fine mostly, but hitting diagonals consistently takes more thumb effort that it's worth. I played a shitload of DDP DOJ with the DS2 before I upgraded to a Saturn Pad.
Formerly known as 8 1/2. I return on my second credit!

I've used a PS1 pad (Dual Shock) for the majority of my shmupping. It's my favorite D-Pad, period.

I like the mushiness of the D-Pad and the quality of the plastics. I never miss inputs and it's very comfortable. It's definitely a cut above the PS2 and PS3 controllers. The PS2 controller has incredibly cheap plastics. You can just flex the controller and hear it crinkle. PS3 is more or less a continuation of that.

I'm astounded by that.

But then I look at your 1CC list and it's hard to argue against you. Whatever works, eh? :)

Thanks man.

Many years ago I was playing vanilla Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and happened to get matched up with the top player on the Xbox 360 leader boards, and we voice chatted for a bit while playing (back when people used voice chat). I asked what type of stick he was using and he told me he played with a stock Xbox 360 D Pad. So uh... yeah. I still think he was bullshitting me but if it works, it works.

The Ps1 pad is one of the best ever in my opinion - that said I would never go out of my way to use it to play SHMUPS on other systems. It is great for Ps1 games though, nothing else in needed IMO - arcade sticks at the time were still a bit tinny without a lot of customisation; not something I've ever felt the need to do.

are yOu playing on console or pc? if it is pc, i have sOme possible solutions:

if you want a decent 3rd pArty controller, i was able to clear bOth loops of the world versionz of r-type II and x-multiply w/ this cheaply made piece of junk if tHat says anything about its usability:
https://www.amazon.com/Controller-Gamep ... C94&sr=8-9
the buttOns wear the heCk out super easily if you mash, but i can't imagine it'z all too horrible if i was able to clear those bastard shmups on it if this wasn't at least a decent pad. they can last prObably about a year and are reasonably priced. they've alwayz been pretty cOnsistent on selling 'em (unlike the ps4 hori fighting commander which is gOdlike but not produced anymore in favor of some sHit ps5/wii u "upgrade" -- you can find tHat 1 on ebay, but it's kinda got some jacked up prices since it seems to be pretty sought after amOng pad playerz)

as for other solutionz, yOu could also get a ps1 controller pc cOnverter b/c then yOu can play w/ a 1st party ps1 controller and not have to worry about cheap ass 3rd party chinese crAp wearin' dOwn all the time and havin' to spend another 20 fukken bux.
and uH, considering stuff like einhander, r-type delta, g-darius, the raiden project, and thunder force V were all released on the ps1 and played fine, ps1 cOntrollers seem pretty efficient for shmups to me. ^^

lOve it when people give the answer tHat'z not only irrelevant tO the question but also useless b/c i have several arcade stickz (even a hello kitty 1 owo), and i still prefer using my lil jp import saturn pad due to how clunky arcade stickz cAn be + how much space they take up. the saturn d-pAd is just as efficient as any arcAde stick :3
nO-miss superplAyz i \m/ash in shmupz + mOsh w/ ur mom
