Some minor problems with my Sony Trinitron

Post by TetsuoXLI »

So recently I was noticing that my CRT sometimes has a red tint on the screen when it should be black. Also, retrace lines often come hand in hand with this. Is this something that can be fixed with adjusting the flyback transformer? Also, there is this strange ghosting effect. Finally, (and this is very minor) images will stretch or shrink very slightly as they scroll across the screen. Is this fixable?

What area of the motherboard do capacitor go bad at most often?

Thank you in advance for any help.

I can attach images if needed

Colored retrace lines are not a sign of something happening with the flyback. White retrace lines would be a different story.

In this case, you want to poke at the individual cut-off/gain/bias controls for red. Possibly cleaning, reflowing, or replacing a bad potentiometer. Could also be the red drive transistor on the neck card is starting to fail open. Swap it with another color and see if your problem shifts to green or blue, if it does, you know that's the issue. Or even just a bad connection for the red wire from main chassis to the neck card.

Resizing (breathing) is often bad filter caps. Replace all the electrolytics in the power supply circuit.

Ghosting can be some different things. Start with the first two. You definitely need to replace the filter caps at a bare minimum before worrying about much else (actually, just do this before even messing with the red issue). Getting fluctuating amounts of power can cause all sorts of weird issues and makes things harder to diagnose.

Thanks for the help. I will work on putting together an order of caps. Just to be clear, the strange sizing is consistent and doesn't change with brightness. Just something I noticed when running the side scroll on 240p test suite. As for the retrace lines, they aren't necessarily colored. I only happen to see them when the screen turns the red shade. There are times when black is properly shown.

A video or two would speak volumes here I'd imagine.

The fact that it tints red at all still means you need to follow the advice re: colors, even if the retrace lines are not only when it tints red.

Imgur messed up some of these videos, making them harder to see.

Those lines aren't raster lines, or at least what the videos seem to convey isn't.

This is what raster lines look like (they can be red/green/blue or white). If you mark your flyback SCREEN knob, then turn it up you'll be able to see them and know what they are for some first-hand knowledge. Then just turn it back down to where you marked.

Instead of using imgur, just share directly from google photos / icloud or use youtube. imgur is just awful far as video quality is concerned.

The red just looks like you need to adjust the bias/cutoff pots from what it looks like in the video.

This is for arcade monitors, but it is entirely useful here as well. Start with step one, and run through it.

Poor adjustments can cause ghosting, so can poor quality (or too long) cabling. Run through the wiki instructions and see where you land / what issues are resolved / which aren't.

The lines on my screen are raster lines, though Imgur failed to show this. I also found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HASKqAOwLms&t=1016s

Would you recommend following this?

I am trying to put together a guide for myself to adjust this TV to the best that it can be (while recognizing that It can't be perfect). But I'm not exactly sure where to start. Should I do a complete re-cap? On top of these color problems, I also want improve the convergence. I have tried adjusting it before and made it look much better but still not what I would like it to be.

From my understanding a general guide to servicing it would be:

1. re-capping (generally just making sure the physical components aren't faulty)
2. Adjust everything shown in the video above (B+ and colors)
3. Try to make the convergence as perfect as possible.

Am I missing anything that could help my TV look better?

I am also planning to do an RGB mod on it but want to get these things all sorted out first.

Additionally, as I looked at the inside of the TV, I couldn't find and physical pots. I assume they would all be in the service menu. My TV is a Sony Trinitron KV-20fs12
