Scale OSSC 960p to 1080p

Post by Trevor spencer »

Hi

I'm trying run my xbox through my ossc to my panasonic plasma (480p x2) but it dosnt like it , I've also tried it through a isis su 20 (dvdo vp20 clone I think) but still no go.

Any idea what other scalers I could use to achieve this ?

Thanks

Extron DSC-301. Excellent scaling, 1 frame of lag. Can be purchased for as little as $60 or $70, able to scale the image to full frame and has on option to pass through the original signal timing. No color adjustments.

Gefen VGA to DVI scaler plus (accepts progressive component over a passive VGA to RCA adapter, 480i deinterlacing is bad). Haven’t tried it with the OSSC, but this thing is great at accepting odd signals as it was designed for PC use. Cheap at $30. Scaling is decent but much softer than the 301. Probably doesn’t matter for 960p. Lots of size presets, overscan will probably get close to full frame. 2 frames of lag, has color adjustments.

If you can find a DVDO iScan Duo that's still on the launch firmware, I haven't been able to reproduce the edge bug on the machine. Unfortunately, the Duo was launched with an undercooked initial firmware and a lot of popular features were added later. If memory serves, both my HDMI outputs don't function properly on this firmware and the machine is named "Duo". Obviously, most users upgraded. Alternately, it would be nice if we could find the original disk that shipped with the day one Duos to roll the firmware back. Looking at the changelogs, I think DVDO broke the latency with 59.94Hz signals with an interlacing patch later on.

That Extron adds a full.frame of lag. Be aware.

Do you need an OSSC at all? You might also consider a Retrotink 5x.

Hi , I had an ossc lying around so I thought I better try and get some use out of it.

As for the frame of lag , I won't be playing any fighting games or shmups on it so hopefully won't be an issue.

Thanks

Just be wary of price, a DSC-301 looks to be about $100, an OSSC is around $100... You're close to 2/3 of the RT5X price anyways depending on what you pay. I know you already have the OSSC but you could sell it if the 5X features interest you and put it towards one.

Try changing the OSSC's 480p Sampling to 640x480 instead of the default DTV mode (720x480). I could get 2x 480p working on my Samsung Plasma by doing that.

The dsc-301 is a very good scaler but I have had problems with it very briefly dropping the signal with an og xbox going through an ossc. If you use a gbs-c in front of the ossc or dsc I believe it fixes the drops.

Will a GBS C work for this?

It will work for scaling 480p to 1280x960, 720p 16:9 or 1080p (4:3 on a 16:9 canvas)

Whether it would work for op's plasma, only testing will tell.

Thanks, but I’m not sure if you’re referring to Source > GBS > Display, or OSSC modes > GBS > Display, or OSSC 960p > GBS > Display (not working). I’m inquiring about OSSC 960p output compatibly with the GBS.

Gbs will pass it through. I dont think it does any "conditioning" of the signal. But if you are converting from hdmi to vga from ossc->gbs vga out, maybe your plasma will handle the vga 960p better. But then you could probably just do that straight out of ossc->tv with the same effect.

Ossc will also pass through higher resolutions. So you could go to a different resolution. In gbs->ossc->tv and get a working signal.

So, there no low lag (less than 1 frame) AND low cost solution for making the OSSC more compatible.

Probably; you would have to feed the GBS Control line 2x and use a DAC after the OSSC. The DAC part could get tricky for some users. Probably not worth the hassle for most people.

The DSC301 is amazing and makes an excellent pairing with the OSSC on various TVs/Monitors. It would probably do everything you are looking to try. I always had trouble with 960 into my DSC-301 > 1080> to an LG Monitor, but that was just my problem. (I think I was able to use the firmware software to update my firmware, but I was never able to obtain the software to make custom resolution setups on that thing. I wasn't able to message anyone of this forum to get that software. Help would be appreciated.)

You can tweak OSSC settings to possibly get this working on your TV.
I have a Panasonic GT60 (2013 plasma) that only works with 480p x2 with tweaks, although it will leave a blank space at the top of the screen.
Here are my findings from 2017:

You can also find many other compatability reports in this thread, maybe even for the exact model TV you have. There is a list in the first post.
