S-video problems

Post by Randorama »

I am having problems with my Dreamcast of late.

I am using an S-video (composite) cable and adapter to scart, but it doesn't work on my Philips CM8833 monitor. S-video works in black and white, if plugged directly to the monitor.

If i use the tv, i get black and white regardless of the peripheral used. Should i get a normal scart cable?

Extra: is there a way to use a laptop with a VGABOX?

For Randorama,

Yeah, you should pick up a Scart cable...it works wonders on DC games that support RGB. I use Japanese RGB 21-pin cable setup though with my DC (in conjunction with a XRGB-2 upscan convertor). I do have both official Sega DC VGA Adapter + 3rd-party Naki DC VGA Box as well to take advantage of those DC games that output in true VGA mode (640 x 480 resolution @ 31 kHz sync rate).

Yes, you can use a DC VGA Box adapter provided that your laptop has a port with "VGA IN" input...otherwise you'd have to buy an external laptop accessory port adapter that has both VGA outputs and inputs (like that on a full-fledged PC tower).

Randorama, do you have a US or Jap Dreamcast?
Is your dreamcast new?
Did it work before?
Just get a scart cable, they should be cheap. I advise one with proper audio out so you can directly hook it up to your audio setup (amplifier)

And to ps Engine Fan X!, which games output in true vga then?
I heard Gunbird 2 does not, but what about other games?
Most 3D games output in VGA and most 2D games not? Is there a list somewhere?

Here's a simple list of DC shmups that support the VGA Box:

Chaos Field
GigaWing
GigaWing 2
Ikaruga
Mars Matrix
Psyvariar 2: The Will to Fabricate
Radirgy
Shikigami No Shiro 2
Under Defeat
Zero Gunner 2

These two DC shmups don't have support for DC VGA Box (but can be forced in VGA Box mode through use of some special VGA Boxes that can trick non-VGA compatible DC games into VGA mode):

Bangaioh (does have support for RGB)
Gunbird 2 (does have support for RGB)
