Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang on Saturn, Major difference?

Post by Nei First »

This has been bugging me for some time now, the Saturn handles the visuals like a charm and both games look tight, but they both also seem very similar.

Not much coverage on the net for Cotton Boomerang What's the difference between the two and which one is the best, anyone know?

Here's some Cotton 2 links for your viewing pleasure.

There was a thread on this some time back which I commented on, wish I'd archived it, heh.

Anyways, here are the basics: the big difference between Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang is that the latter employs a "team" setup, in which you select 3 characters to use (a la Batrider) out of 8. No energy meter this time: one hit takes out your character and shifts to the next one (though you can bring the lost character back by catching a randomly-appearing flashing teacup in the "tea time!" bonus section at the end of each stage). You can also switch between them by using a limited supply of "change bombs" (which replace the "magic" bombs from 2). Every character now has a "default" elemental property (unlike in 2, where you can collect items to change it), though they can still power up their shots with yellow crystals: on that note, your firepower is a lot more impressive in Boomerang, but the enemies shoot at you a lot more too, so the stages, while similarly themed, are laid out differently to allow for more weaving between bullets. You've lost some of the "command" attacks (such as the ground bomb) but gained others (including a bullet-eating charge shot), and the chain and combo scoring systems from Cotton 2 are intact. There is also a "practice" mode you can unlock in order to practice scoring, though I'm not sure what else you can unlock.

That's what I can recall off the top of my head, though I'm sure there are other things I've forgotten. Whether one is "better" or not depends on your tastes: Cotton 2 is a bit more "traditional," while Boomerang is more "out there." I own both and don't regret it, though others surely disagree. Hope that helps.

Thanx for taking the time to write that detailed info man, that's helped alot. :D

I thought the levels were quite similar, Cotton 2 levels seem alot brighter, but I like the fact you can character select in boomerang.

How much did you pay for each one Bullet magnet?
Also, is it a hectic shooter with lots to blow up, or is it fairly easy with little going on?

As I said, the level "themes" are the same (i.e. in each one you have a forest level, an ocean level, a mountain level, etc.), but the layout in each one is different; generally, in Boomerang the levels are more open to suit the extra bullet dodging, while in 2 you have more walls, narrow passageways, etc (just for the record, hitting walls doesn't hurt you in either game), plus some graphical differences.

I paid around 30 dollars for Cotton 2 (it included a mini-calendar along with the game, obi, and instructions, nothing special but good for collectors) and around 60 for Boomerang (no obi), in my experience those are fairly "average" prices for either game, though if you're patient enough there may be a bargain or two floating around (though both are relatively rare).

I wouldn't classify either one as especially "easy" (though you can adjust the difficulty), and while the second one is more on the manic side I wouldn't quite group them in there either...if anything I might call them "technique" shooters (if that's even a term), since success (no pun intended) depends largely on how skillful you are in pulling off the command moves and performing combos and chains, both in terms of scoring well and also pure survival (try killing a boss in Boomerang with nothing but regular shots, you'll be there a while...if you last that long). You can set the command shots to separate buttons if you're having trouble (you need to unlock that feature in Cotton 2), but mastering the techniques seems to be the main draw for either game, at least that's how I see it.

Also, you might be interested to know that Cotton 2 includes both an Arcade mode and a Saturn mode, with some different graphics and enemy placements, sort of like Remix mode in Border Down.
