Evil Looking Homies in Games

I love the trope of shifty, menacing, evil, or scary looking characters that are simply neutral and helpful to outright benevolent. I always think that's cool. After a thorough playthrough of Tears of the Kingdom, I was reminded that Zelda has a number of these and my favorites for that matter. Agitha is a somewhat odd and outwardly bubbly Hylian girl that gives you money for furthering her innocent entomology pastime. As a character, she doesn't doesn't raise many questions other than "where the fuck are your parents?"
But this?

It makes for an interesting character. And I get curious about their origins and goals for whatever deeds they're doing for me.

Marvelous Chester from Dark Souls. Bit of a dick; charges high prices, tries to PVP-mug you at one point, and is somewhat pissy when foiled by a stern bitch-slap. Nice Mushroom Grandma is scurred of him, too. Don't ever step to a Yharnam Boy again you mincing no-step no-gun twat, I see you again I'll take that toy off you and fuck you with it.



But in his ruthless game's context? So rovable :3 :3 :3 He's hilarious even when getting his ass handed to him - "AH~! There! Right there!" Yo Ches, I was only selling the ProtoBB heat bro, sometimes a knife really is just a knife - but I always leave him be, even after slapping the shit out of him, just to chat about the dreadful goings-on. He's always up for a bit of archaeology talk! GREAT va, expertly teasing a character more troubled than his playfully wicked persona lets on.

Look at this sleazy fuck. He approaches you in regards to a business deal, at a time when your character is living on the edge of society. The only work you're able to find is illegal and highly fucked up. Then this '70s pornstar-looking motherfucker with Dorf Mafia connections rolls in with a fast story. Seems like a typical shady guy who will sell you out later in the game, right?

Nope. Varric is the GOAT. He is the truest, bluest friend you will ever have. He looks like a slimeball but he is altruistic as hell. He always has your back, no matter what.

DA2 is an incredibly flawed and compromised game, but Varric (and the Qunari) were the bright spot of my playtime. Varric is an interesting person. He has a strong enough personality he could have been the main character of his own game. Hell, in a way, I guess DA2 IS his game. He's the one who tells it. And from the start to the end, Varric always has your back. Even when the story is over, Varric has your back.
