PC/Console hardware for shmups

Post by Drewdo »

Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions for non-mainstream PC/Console hardware that's good for shmups?

If you prefer to play with an arcade stick, you can buy a Brook universal fighting board and build a stick that works with anything that has a USB port. I have one that I use with my PC/X360/PS4/Switch.

I'm not sure about how you define non-mainstream or whether you mean hardware platforms or accessories, but the first thing that came to mind is the Evercade.

Japanese Saturn seconded. Can't think of anything more fitting in a niche/oddball/classic/super-cool way.

MiSTer.

Has some Cave cores already, more coming, and a ton of other arcade games are on there. Of course it also plays all the consoles up to 16 bit and Saturn and PS1 are being worked now.

The thing is, right, and sorry/not sorry for saying it but an average pc (ie somthing with a 10th gen i3 and a middling graphics card) will do everything up to and including xbox 360 and PS3 games with no real worries about finding a controller that works or getting it to look right on a modern display. It's not 'cool' or whatever but it works.

Compact, no-context weird question. What is mainstream anyway? And what's wrong with it? Just buy the platform that runs the software you want. Or do just just want to fill up some shelves for a youtube background or whatever?

Megadrive, SNES, Ps1 and Saturn will cover the older stuff. Dreamcast and PS2 covers the newer stuff.

After that its Japanese XB360.

Youre into new consoles after that.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
