Okay, my handy dandy HTML work...

Post by JBC »

I just wanted some opinions on the new profile page i've created. Unfortunatley, the electricity rollover animation takes the longest to load, so let it sit for a second 8)

Not sure what this looks like in Firefox, but i think it's pretty sleek in regular ole' internet explorer.

I'm pretty proud of the filters

I'm sorry but I couldn't even let it load.

A biggie rule in designing webpages is to make sure they're accessible for everyone to use. Not everyone uses IE... I use Opera. The page was a complete mess in Opera unless that was how it was supposed to look. I'm sure you know this but the page should be completely able to navigate through at 800x600 resolution. Making a webpage that is only good on this resolution and this browser really limits your audience.

Also, a major annoyance is having background music play, huge hi-res images, and extra stuff that really isn't needed.

I may be a bit of a nitpicker but I like my pages clean and simple. I design pages i've down around the lowest common system out there. In my case it was a slow 400mhz celeron.

I would say... clean it up a bit, remove the extra stuff (mouse cursors, etc.) lighten up the images (only use a few), and make sure it is compliant in all browsers first!

Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh.. Just wanted to share..

White text on a light-coloured pattern background is a bit difficult to read. (those boxes closer to the bottom)

But, I understand this is an early work of yours? Keep practicing and you'll be rolling out some real cool stuff soon!

Firefox here - total mess, all over the place, bits overlapping, scrolls down 5 pages of extra scrollbar sections, and a warning about needing an extra plugin - what did you embed in it?

Better luck next time ;-) Consider developing your pages using a standards compliant browser.

Absolute pants in FF and Opera 8 (YES, I know 9 is out, I'll get to it). I peeked at the source, and while I don't do HTML for work or play, I can say with some confidence that nested tables and absolute positioning are bad ideas. Every one of those table nests has its own scrollbar, and Opera moves the last one around like an image if I try to drag the bar.

I remember my first website. God, it was an evil-looking thing, messy, huge images and so on. But's a learning experience, and an important one if you want to get into web design.

Your site has quite a lot of design issues that have already been mentioned: nested frames and tables, embedded multimedia, bloated image sizes, clashing text and backgrounds, rollovers not properly scripted, layers, multiple scrollbars, etc etc.

One rule of thumb: All internet users have a short attention span. If they don't get what they want within five seconds, they go somewhere else. And for that reason alone, no one wil ever 'sit for a second' to watch some random animation load, unless it was something vital to the site.

I think it's vital that you have a plan of what you want down on paper first before you hit the HTML editors and Photoshop, so you can get all the elements planned and iron out potential problems immediately. Things can often go very wrong very quickly if you hit the computer first. Also, keep it as simple as you can, you don't need to be too complex. And try to design for the low-spec systems, as not everyone has an AMD Athlon64 3500+ with 4GB of RAM ^_-

I'll give you two sites to check out: http://www.webmonkey.com/ is a web developers resource, and good for both beginner and expert alike. Check that out for tips and tutorials to make your pages better. http://www.linkdup.com/ is a design portal to all sorts of different art and design related websites, check out some of their links and get some inspiration.

Good luck! It's difficult to start, but great fun if you persevere and work past the difficult initial stage. ^_-
