Faint jailbars on my SNES CPU-GPM-02 after vertical line fix

Post by maton1200 »

Hi,

I followed this website: https://www.retrorgb.com/snesverticalline.html to have my SNES' 7805 regulator replaced with a 78S05 which should take care of the annoying vertical line many SNES' experience.

Before mod:

After mod:

As you can see the mod did work to solve the vertical line issue, however, I am noticing more pronounced jailbars. I decided to add a 22uF capacitor as mentioned in the link, however, I am not sure it made any difference because I still see the same result. It seems to be noticeable on greyish or dark-blueish backgrounds though.

My snes is an SNES CPU-GPM-02 and I am using S-Video exclusively, also, I am not really interested in using RGB. Is there any mod or known workaround to minimize or solve the jailbar issue?

This is perhaps something simple since I have seen some people putting copper tape on their NES' PPU to take care of jailbar noise, same for Genesis V1.

Your pics aren't showing.

I've not tried the copper tape method, but one of my old phat SNES consoles had some faint jailbars. I replaced all the capacitors on the motherboard and they went away.

Did you replace the tiny surface-mounted capacitors too?

Yeah, all the main surface caps on the board. Just grabbed a kit from www.console5.com

Need a 100n ceramic on the output leg to ground and at least 0.33uf electro cap on input to ground.

Looks like oscillation from the regulator. Caps should fix it, just start with a large value cap like 2200uf on the input side and see if it changes anything.
If it does then the power supply you are using might be questionable.

This makes sense. I could give it a try. This is how the default SNES circuit looks like:

So one capacitor would need to be replaced.

Edit..

I checked with a PC USB oscilloscope I have:

Input of the regulator:

Output of the regulator:

There is barely any ripple in the output to my surprise. To me this is just oscilloscope noise
