Les Avenirs by Miss Bean

Appreciate the write-up! Been a while since I have listened to it tbh - perhaps tonight. But I can't shake the feeling that it's a great album and I'm just not 100% getting it (though I do think it's very good.)OmegaFlareX wrote: Re: Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You

So yeah, I pretty much called it. It is very Post-rock-y. But not the kind that's in my library, which has frequent moments of full-tilt insanity; this is far more chill, I guess you could say. I cannot recall of the top of my head any Post-rock bands to compare it to, I just know I've heard this sort of thing before when first investigating the sub-genre. That said, I would not be surprised if the artists were inspired by what Radiohead was doing at the time. Also, I apologize for not having any context to the progression of the band's sound, since I'm not familiar with Unwound's other work.
The album had a cool opening. This bagpipes-like drone. I wasn't too impressed with the first 4 songs, but I did notice that there were some nice clean guitar sounds on one or more of them. Drums were really low in the mix, and I'd say the vocals remind me a bit of Sunny Day Real Estate. At first there were a lot of bizarre time signatures in small-ish-sounding environments, stuff that generally puts me off, but over time the album started to expand and skew and distort, which grabbed my attention: there were some really cool musical atmospheres in Demons Sing Love Songs/One Lick Less, and some nice shoegaze-like pitch-bending in Off This Century, all of which were more my thing. Summer Freeze had a really sinister riff which I liked a lot, and I'd say Scarlette was the most ear-catching track of the bundle, at least until the vocals came in, heh. The closing pieces were way out there, in deep space, and I caught myself thinking this would be a super rad album to listen to on weed or psychedelics. Neither of which I can partake in, oh well.
Overall, this was some really complex and creative stuff. I acknowledge its fans' perceived greatness. Unfortunately, the sketchy openers and utterly experimental nature lead me to conclude that it's not really for me. However, I think that with some more listens, I could learn to love it. In an online game a couple years ago, I met a fan of this band called Mew, who pointed me in their direction, and I came up with a similar conclusion to this album. The issue is, I don't really have motivation to explore further. Maybe if I had a significant other who liked them, I could be a fan as well.
I've heard mention of Slint before, but I forget where. I will add it to my list of things to check out.BurlyHeart wrote:Have you heard Slint's Spiderland? It is similarly praised, perhaps even more so than Unwound's Leaves. I have yet to really listen to it myself. Been on my wishlist for ages, but something else always catches my eye and I haven't got around to buying it yet. Maybe next paycheck.
Unwound just got back together and is touring. They are playing in Philly on the 15th and 16th.OmegaFlareX wrote:Unwound
Nice work, I've been listening this afternoon. Interesting meandering quality to the compositions... doesn't always work for me but I certainly prefer it to conventional song structures and it gives your pieces an almost ambient quality sometimes. Favorites for me are sun-colored envelope, unreusable, and a nice breeze. Do you like the mecha ritz ost? Some of the melodic sensibilities (and sound palette) felt similar.mycophobia wrote:i released an album today https://mycophobiah.bandcamp.com/album/ ... l-sequence
hey thanks for listening. the structure of most of the tracks was a deliberate choice for sure, i wanted to keep the tracks dynamic both in segments and in the composition of the segments themselves. Aphex Twin, primarily his later-ish output as The Tuss and on Syro were an inspiration in that regard. Riot ended up with an accidental verse-chorus structure that sounded too good to pass up though.blackoak wrote:Nice work, I've been listening this afternoon. I saw they released something and have been meaning to check it out. I want to go into it in the right mood though bc it's so easy for me to hate on older acts like that. I agree about MFTM actually. I never really got into that album. In fact, I'd go as far as to say they didn't have any truly consistent albums between Speak and Spell and Violator. The closest they came for me was Black Celebration, but even that one has one or two songs I usually skip. If Vince Clark came back, now that would be really interesting.GaijinPunch wrote:New Depeche Mode album. Best since the 90's? In touch with mortality, which was the theme even before Fletch's passing. There's a couple on there that I'm not feeling, but not a big deal. I actually really dislike 2 songs on Music for the Masses which is considered a fucking smash by any standards. Anywho, they play in Man Jose tonight. Trying to figure out my price point for good seats on the resale market.
I love MtfM. Just a couple of tracks to me are duds. It's one of my stranded on an island albums. But yeah I think all of the albums up to Violator, and even Songs of Faith and Devotion (which took me ages to warm up to) are all excellent.vol.2 wrote: I saw they released something and have been meaning to check it out. Better if Alan came back.If Vince Clark came back, now that would be really interesting.

I don't *dislike* mftm, or any of the other albums in the in-between time; I just think they all have 2 or 3 songs that are snoozers on them. What remains is still excellent, but yeah. I mean, SNS and Violator are both absolute masterpieces. Constructed of sterner stuff if you will, and the stars were aligned.GaijinPunch wrote: I love MtfM. Just a couple of tracks to me are duds. Yeah lol. That's not going to happen. Gore cucked Wilder so hard he'll never look back. I remember seeing some interviews sometime back with Wilder, iirc, he suggested that his treatment was borne out of Gore's feelings of abandonment when Clark left the band. It's not hard to imagine feeling left out in the cold when your primary song writer just ups and leaves after your first album. There was an interview I once ran across on youtube where Gore said as much. It was before ABF came out and they were nervous about living up to "Just Can't Get Enough." Anyway, I can't say I know how much Wilder contributed, but he certainly seems to think it was enough to be considered a member of the band, officially and financially speaking. I don't blame him.Better if Alan came back.
I would agree, but there are very few albums that don't... for anybody. That's where I think Violator is quite the exception. It's a tight 9 tracks, which makes that easier to pull off, but the B-Sides of that era (which don't really seem to be a thing anymore sadly) are dope AF, too! Anywho, Of all of the older albums I've always dug A Broken Frame more than anything. Far more than Speak and Spell. I wouldn't mind hearing Photoraphic at a show though.vol.2 wrote: I don't *dislike* mftm, or any of the other albums in the in-between time; I just think they all have 2 or 3 songs that are snoozers on them. Probably a gray area for the most part. One example I was shown though was the MFTM sleeper To Have and To Hold. Rather than fuck it up, you can read Alan's words on it here. Not sure about any animosity between him and Gore, ever really. Everything I've read said (including in Q&A's w/ him on the Recoil website) said they ended on good terms. Fletch was the one that was really pissed off. He even reunited like 10 years ago to perform Somebody, live. What a lucky bunch of fuckers that got to hear that.Anyway, I can't say I know how much Wilder contributed, but he certainly seems to think it was enough to be considered a member of the band, officially and financially speaking. I think some of the Wilder/Gore animosity has been whitewashed. If you go back and dig up biography references and older interviews, Wilder painted a much darker picture of his relationship with the band. Supposedly was treated as an outsider and talked down to. When he left the band, he did so because he couldn't stand it anymore, and was very vocal about it at the time. There was a biography called Stripped that contains a bunch of this stuff. But then again, who really knows?GaijinPunch wrote: Probably a gray area for the most part. One example I was shown though was the MFTM sleeper To Have and To Hold. He also stated in a Q&A that DM split everything four ways, and anything that comes in from the tunes when he was a full time member he still gets his 25%.
The press statement could definitely be taken as such. Same w/ the quotes and the other comments. He's also said the reasons for leaving were many fold, and he deemed it better to make a press release that was rather to the point rather than letting the press speculate wildly. But I don't think it's any secret - they were in a dark place as a group. I don't think Dave even got clean until after Ultra which was another few years. Who wants to hang around a heroin addict? The last one in the quotes sounds pretty interesting. Also the ones that the tensions alone are not why he left. I can totally buy that he's a workaholic though. Sounds a lot like a lot of jobs I've had.vol.2 wrote: I think some of the Wilder/Gore animosity has been whitewashed.
