shmups with elaborate storylines?

Post by RoninBuddha »

i know here must be some? even though SHmups arent really particular about storylines, hehe.. so, what shmups do have elaborate storylines, more so, have story sequenes/cutscenes in-game, not just stuff on the manual (?) or website... :D

Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga - no cutscenes here but text blurbs at the beginning of each chapter.

Shmups have plots?
Next thing you know, you'll be able to summon Guardian Forces a-la Final Fantasy 8, complete with 15 second animation sequences.

Radiant Silvergun comes to mind. About 15 minutes of full-motion anime video woven at the start and end of the game and lots of pop-up stills and dialog at the start and ends of many levels... The story is one of the reasons I love the game - get to

http://www.emuxhaven.net/~silver

for the main fan translation site and more specifically to:

http://www.emuxhaven.net/~silver/Main%20Story.html

for the actual story with inline pics from the game.

One of my favorite lines is "8…16…32…THEY'RE INCREASING BY THE SECOND!!" I love the binary progression here - exactly what you would expect from the mechanized menace that plagues the Earth in RS.

It should be noted that most of the anime was updated/added by Treasure for the Saturn port. The arcade rev has mostly stills and a less fleshed-out story. The home console port gave Treasure the freedom to do more.

Yeah, RSG and Ikaruga come most immediately to mind...Treasure loves their pretentious plots.

The Shikigami no Shiro games have quite a bit of dialogue and whatnot in them too, a few doujinshi manga have been made based on it.

I know it's not a traditional shmup but a rails shooter, but PANZER DRAGOON ORTA has a nice and epic story.

Just about all the Touhou games made by Zun Soft/Team Shanghai Alice have plenty of dialogue before the stage boss.

Psyvariar Medium Unit has some heady terminology...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Check out the opening prologue of Psyvariar Medium Unit G-Card for Taito G-Net mobo or the PS2 version released on CD-Rom...but it scrolls pretty quick. Luckily, I had the Success produced Reverse Babel Label 2001 edition DVD of Psyvariar Apperciate Vol. 1 that allows one to pause at any given time. ^_~

There 's more explanation of Psyvariar teminology on Success' site regarding the Taito G-Card version of Psyvariar Medium Unit. Pretty heady stuff if you ask me...

-----------------------
Psyvariar Medium Unit story summary:

Basically, a group of scientists develope a ground breaking experiment of "organic-based A.I." (literally organic-based silicon matter with the power of a super computer) which later revolts against it's human masters thus setting up the stage for the scientists to create new psychic pilots called "Psyvariars" to bring down the supercomputer (and it's evil cronies) once & for all to save humanity.

"Do human beings have future?" -- end story phrase from Psyvariar Revision Taito G-Card... (sounds like Engrish to me) ^_~

Gradius V has a fantastic plot imho :D
I bet Mushihimesama has a good plot as well, but I'd like to know what happens after the bosses get killed. What the hell do the voices mean?
And you all are forgetting Philosoma! Twisted, long-winded, complex and hyperdramatic plot. Awesome.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

MSX Gradius 2 and Gofer no Yabou Episode 2. Yes, they have plots.

The PCE version of Zero Wing has between-level anime scenes with dialogue. So does Spriggan, the SS Gundam shooters, the CD-based Macross shooters, and Quite a few other PCE shooters. Spriggan markII and Robo Aleste have in-battle dialogue. Of course, none of them have a particularly interesting story IMO. The Guardian Legend now might sorta fit as well although it's more a difference in gameplay than story.

What about Sigma Star Saga for the GBA? Never played it, but isn't it supposed to have story sequences?

Since you had a Border Down signature, Roninbuddha, Border Down and all the various Taito shmups have more or less complicated plots.

Yeah, but the incomprehensible story line is part of what gives Tyrian its charm. I mean, who doesn't love all the random weird data cubes & commercials (like for Beano Crackers) they throw in there? Classic!

yeah, they're bi-lingual too!

anyways, i'd like to add to my question, i jsut tried Harmful park for the first time, and i guess, it has a bit on emphasis on plot, i mean, 10+mins Intro, and the little in-between aniamtions..

Philosoma, although not a superb shmup, has a story to it. Nothing that will win an oscar.....but still enjoyable. I enjoyed the cut scenes.

I don't know if you'd call Bangai-O a real shmup, but it has a anime'ish story to it.

Hi all:

Did someone mention Einhander yet? It has a good, simple story that progresses as you play. Give it a try.

Cheers.

Silpheed The Lost Planet had a very in depth story with cutscenes (well animated I might add) and voiceovers. pretty basic game, tho.

Pretty much any R-Type game has an ace story, especially Final.
Though shmups don't delve into them, I really do enjoy the backstories for most of them. Like in Strikers 1945, the idea that former superpower enemies unite using the latest in technology against an alien threat may sound cliche, but I dig it.

Steam Hearts (PC-98, PC-Engine, Saturn) - It's a shooter with hentai cutscenes after every stage and plenty of voice dialogue. I don't understand the entire plot but the story goes... the leaders/stage bosses are under mind control, and the only way to free them is for the main characters to f*ck them.

Yeah, I liked Einhander's story. I especially liked the plot twist at the end. It made for a great final boss battle. Man, that game is great.

You know that could happen if SquarEnix made another shmup. I mean, some ships' bombs summon large craft anyway.

Jets 'n' Guns has a coherent storyline... one just has to be sure to read it between stages! It's all too easy to just hop into the shop, get your goodies, and go blasting off to the next battle... and even though you still get a little of the story at the start of that battle, more in-depth background info is given by your Contact if you talk to them between levels. :)
