Chop up and Post Your Shmup Ringtones Here
I did a few searches and caught the notion nobody likes the shitty ringtones regular people are blastin' at full. I've never met anybody who played any games like these, so I figured I'd cut up some shmup songs and make my own ringtones. I'd venture a guess I'd be the first and last person to sport such decent underground music outside the interweb. So my Post 1 says I should make everything I've been creating for myself available to the establishment here.
Because it would bring me a smile if I caught some irresponsible fanboy letting his phone go off in public to Bigcore.
Everything I posted has been trimmed down to about 28 seconds. All mp3s. The rest of the people are variable:
Information on my tones about each song, where it's from, and what to expect before you open it can be found at this page I handcrafted.

I figure I'd make these useful by...you know...telling you how to get these ringtones on your phone 'n such:
For this case, make sure you have
I. Phone that does mp3 ringtones
II. Phone internet
Now, sure you could try to navigate with your phone internet to my siteweb thing and try to download directly, but if that URL typing crap is too long or your phone sucks at unguided downloading, you should:
1. download the tones you want right here, right now, on the computron.
2. run to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/
3. I'd leave that first optional box blank, fill out the next two, and hit the fun-filled 'upload' button.
4. Now whip out the portable telephone and point the celli-internet to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/jump.php
5. You'll be able to take a guess if this is going to work out if you see a jump code box to enter numbers and the web page is recognizing your phone model, conveniently giving you the screen resolution in case you wanted to saaaay, Photoshop some wallpapers to upload to the phone later-on. Type in that jump code that should be sitting on your PC screen still.
If you don't suck at typing numbers, you should get the opportunity to trust the 'scary unknown un recommended download' your hateful phone company tells you. Yeah, you should totally trust it. Now you're phone internet should stay on the jump code site so you can upload more through the PC and punch in another quick 7 numbers on the handset.
...if the jump code thing didn't work, maybe try the optional box on the PC site upload section. If that still sucks, I know the rumkin site thing seems to bias Sprint, so track down your own cell company's unofficial phone uploader site. Think of other possibilities like PC link cables from your store, or transferring data from your Mini or Micro SD slot. Phone software is still poorly made to sway users to only use microtransactions. You just gotta figure out the loopholes.
If you can't pull off that list of instructions because of phone limitations, lacking phone internet, phone brand, provider, etc. Try going to http://smashthetunes.com. It'll take more time and needs a register, but it has far more diverse options for getting songs from point A to your phone through a text/picture message, email attachment, etc.
the mp3s are 128kbps by the way...
And I used ACID 4.0 to cut up the original songs. I cut the song at 15.1 on the timeline starting from 0 to get my 28 second tone.
Now I encourage you to make some ringtones for the cause. I/We could use something that isn't from Gradius if other shmups sport some catchy themes. I like hard boss themes if ya haven't caught it...
Because it would bring me a smile if I caught some irresponsible fanboy letting his phone go off in public to Bigcore.

I've taken a crack at doing a couple of ringtones (I had a MIDI of "Beginning of the History" from Gradius 1 and Shooting Star (level 2 intro) from Gradius 2 I was using on my old phone since it didn't take MP3s without conversion.) I also tried making ringtones out of Burning Heat (stage 1) from Gradius 2 but couldn't get decent results out of it. I was dumping .WAVs out of M1 (arcade audio emulator) and converting them, but the volume levels on the ones I was using didn't work on my phone all that well (it tends to have a somewhat quiet ringer.) Gradius 2 and 3 have a bunch of songs in them that would make good ringtones if someone was willing to take a crack at it.
I'm used to having dorky ringtones on my phone, as I'm currently rockin' the old school version of "Vampire Killer" from Castlevania on mine for instance.
A while ago, I attempted to make a ringtone of the staff roll theme (Stand Up Against Myself) from Thunder Force IV, so if anyone's looking for ideals, some stuff from that game may fit, specifically the boss themes and the omake tracks.

Got the name around the time cd burning was becoming feasible. Every year me and some guys would go to some cabin in Pennsylvania. Friends started looking to me to making entertaining road trip mixes, probably 'cause I was the only one out of the group who apparently was smart enough to only include full songs stolen from old Napster and not put the same song twice on the same disk.
When I first asked my friends when we arrived at the cabin if one of my road trip mixes were up to snuff, they agreed I choose well when it comes to the next track keeping the pace from the last song while keepin' shit interesting. Ha, so not to toot my own horn, but "beep, beep". ahh, I kid, I kid.
But the second year we went back to PA, somebody picked up the case with my handwritten track list. Disgusted to find that I put things like AC/DC, Meat Loaf, Marolyn Manson, Fatboy Slim, Primitive Radio Gods, Garth Brooks, Dokken, N.W.A.. Better Than Ezra, Kid Rock, War, Primus, and the theme song to Shaft all on the same disc, it became a total roast against me after that. So DJ Incompetent was what I was dubbed, and every time I was with those guys when we talked anything about music, that name would stick with me the rest of the day.
So if this whole college thing is ever over and done with, the plan of mine was to get unlazy and work on some sort of legitimate mash-up disk. Clip a little of every genre that wasn't a total waste of time. Kinda like...2 many dj's..."as heard on radio soulwax pt. 2"...or something...
DJ Incompetent was the best possible quasi-alias I could think of to waltz into such an endevor.
Fuck, why do my posts turn into fucking novellas. Goddammit...

I have no shmup ringtones at the moment, but if someone wants my Super Mario Land or Mystic Defender ringtones (w/ accompanying title screen wallpaper formatted for a Motorola V710) just PM me. They're in MP3 format & are 48Khz mono to keep them small but listenable. I need to go back & make those TF4 ringtones again...

I think ringtones sound a bit better if they loop somewhat accurately, so I tried to cut out a decent loop from each track, within the 30sec limitations. All MP3s, 128kbps, using Goldwave to extract out bits of the track.
I haven't come across a decent enough track to make a ringtone out of for my own phone yet (besides Ibara's first stage, but I'm having difficulty finding a good enough section to cut out) so for the moment, I'm using Super Mario Bros (the remixed version) and Pacman as my ringing and message tones. ^_^
(Might give my phone some Garegga love someday, either Subversive Awareness or Stab and Stomp!, with the 'just pressed Start' track as message tone... ^_-)

I'll be waiting for said ringtones. Then I'll get to remember if I've played the damn game before. Ahhh, and if all else fails, I just wait for the Wii to come out....good times.FRO wrote:I need to go back & make those TF4 ringtones again...
If I rembember from '02, Goldwave might still be downloadable and free-ish. Just use it to slim your song to 20something seconds, then use that rumkin thing uptop to send it to the phone. Props to Icarus for the Goldwave name drop.Blade wrote:I'm still looking for a program that lets you make your own ringtones and dialtones...

Hey, If anybody wants to help me out, I've been looking for the Playstation/Saturn sound quality version of somethin' from Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius. On the official soundtrack listing, the song goes by:
#8 Judy My Love ~from "Love is Calling Me" (Judy Ongg)~ (Stage 1 Boss BGM B)
It plays at the very end when you free the panda with the pink ballerina outfit from that giant disco ball.
And then he sings music notes at you..
I tracked down the snes version of it and it blows compared to what plays in my actual PSX. And sweet jesus don't refer me to the actual Judy Ongg song. That bitch sounds like a chinese Barbara Streisand backed by a band from India.
I'd much appreciate the hookup if anybody knows how to get it...with minimal jumping through hoops...

A twenty-odd second loop, that was nice and easy to cut out as well. Should sound pretty cool when it repeats over and over.

The Raiden II CD-Rom game for the PC from Interplay has Red book Audio for the cool BGM tunes. A simple conversion of the Boss Music to MP3 & you're in business. ^_~thesuperkillerxxx wrote:OST ! If I get bored, I might try a few more. I'm not sure how the volume is on these ones (they seem a bit too quiet on my phone, but it has problems with ring tone volume in the first place.)

Icarus, man. You kick some serious ass! May you be knighted for such ass kickings. Thanks a crapload for the Jikkyo tone! It went to my phone with much haste.
Anyway, I like my tone how it is, but for looping purposes, it doesn't really work because the first build-up intro you used (from the track beginning) is slower than the pace of the rest of the song. The second build-up (the part immediately after the spot you cut) works much better as it keeps the song flowing at the same pace throughout.
Yeah...that sounded nerdy.
So the thing is, I really like that song on its own for the 'dramatic' second piano build-up, and wouldn't mind using the whole song unedited for other devious purposes. I hate to be the bastard-dick who asks for the glass of milk after you hooked me up with a sweet-ass cookie, but would it be convenient for you to simply drop off the full Jikkyo song in the same folder you dropped off the ringtone? You don't even have to throw a link on here, just say "Hey yo, it's up" and I can just slice the URL and find it on my own.
And if your soundtrack collection happens to have the full:
#31 Farewell Love (Ending BGM) ~from Gradius II~
from Ultimate Parodius sitting next to the fully Judy, My Love song, I wouldn't mind picking that up as well. All file-quotas permitting of course.

I assumed looping tones were useful to you, so I tried to do it where I could. If I choke up a song title, let me know.
I've been meaning to ask you about that. Does your phone actually seamlessly loop? Like, without any delay and everything? My old phone would loop tones when I didn't want it to, but it would have a good three-second delay, so I couldn't use little sound bites for message alerts. My new phone doesn't loop anything period. No option for it either.Icarus wrote: A twenty-odd second loop, that was nice and easy to cut out as well. Should sound pretty cool when it repeats over and over.

I completed that TF4 ringtone set & have included a 162 X 220 wallpaper of the title screen (Lightening Force) but I have nowhere to host the .ZIP file. It's 10MB in size. I didn't get too fancy, I basically took the first 28-30 seconds of each tune (except the 2-3 that were shorter, those are intact) & snipped that as the tone. They are all encoded w/ LAME, 48kbps/40Hz Mono to keep quality high but filesize down. Note that these are MP3 files, designed to work on my Motorola V710, but should work on any phone that supports MP3-based ringtones. Otherwise, you could try to convert them into SMAF files & rename to MID if you have a polyphonic-capable phone that won't do MP3. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. If anyone has a place for me to host this, that would be great, otherwise I'll try to get it to whoever wants it.
