shmups in movies
I believe we've had this topic before, but I couldn't find it.
I saw this Australian movie, Little Fish, from 2005. In it Cate Blanchett plays a shooter in an arcade! Very cool. They show screen shots for a moment. It looked like a Raiden game, but not a part that I remember clearly. Does anyone know what game she's playing?
What other movies have shooters in them?

I have a better idea: Shmups in literature.
"And there she was, carefully moving the huge stick with her slender hands, while tapping the buttons as fast as only a women like her could do it. Slowly he inserted the credit, and through the dense night a loud "Just a couple more shots" was heard, followed by a loud exploding sound. Together they entered their initials, and this hot summer night will be forever engraved in their hearts."
Sorry, a BIT off topic
Honestly, I believe the other topic was about shmup-like movies, so no really double-posting here... too bad I can`t think of any. But those must be older movies from the 80ies to early 90ies. I remember this movie with 2PAC in which they played a rough game of Street Fighter, though. There was a time where arcades appeared quite often in movies, I guess.

How about shmups on a TV news programme? Quite a few years ago a local news crew went to interview a friend of mine about a console fanzine that was about to get a UK notional launch as a "proper" mag, and i was on hand to demo a game. I chose Gate of Thunder as it was probably the most visually interesting game we had at the time. The filming part was rather tedious but i had the joy of seeing myself shmupping on the TV, so that was fairly cool.

An episode of Will & Grace showed some arcade shmups...
The USA produced TV sitcom of "Will & Grace" featured an episode where the gang is at an arcade and the Capcom CPS-2 produced Mars Matrix arcade upright is shown. ^_~
I couldn't believe the second episode of the 2nd season of Will & Grace, pushing the boundaries of FCC's censorship on American TV when it aired that night. WTF!? I'll bet Debra Messing had fun with the "leaking water bottle episode" though. Reminds me of the Japanese fetish anime female CGI artwork featuring "spraying" everywhere. Why is that male anime character's noses bleed at the sight of impossibly big knockers? ^_~

Hey...
Seriously, I experienced quite a chuckle from that post.
More on topic...
Check out the 80's movie NightMares.
Its a compilation of short stories, and one featuring Emilio Estaves in which he's an addicted gamer going for the record. Lots of classic retro shmups can be seen in the malls arcade.

Joysticks circa 1983 shows an arcade shmup classic...
There was this 1983 theaterical movie release in the USA called "Joysticks" that had a cameo shot of Defender (or was it Stargate?). But it mostly featured T&A sandwiched between a stupid thin plot to 'save a popular local arcade hangout from closing it's doors forever from encroaching development'. To my knowledge, this particular "Joysticks" movie hasn't been re-released on standard DVD format and only exists on VHS format. I'll admit that I've got an original copy of it. ^_~

The actress you're referring to is none other than Catherine Hicks who starred in both movies of "The Last Starfighter" & "Night of the Comet" flicks. TLS film came out in 1984 and NotC film came out in 1986. ^_~

Actually, if you count "references to," I've done that in my book
