Wanted: the 411 on Tecmo/Allumer's Zing Zing Zip shmup PCB

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

How obscure is this 1992 produced Tecmo/Allumer's "Zing Zing Zip" arcade shmup PCB? I realize that it's a Tate'd arcade Jamma PCB shmup as well. And how is the gameplay + game mechanics of it? (The bullet character on the main title screen of Zing Zing Zip reminds me of the stylized bullet character on Namco's GunBullet/Point Blank arcade light gun shooting series.)

This this particular arcade game playable in Mame?

-----------------------
It's for sale on eBay right now:

And here's the listing of it on the "Killer List of Video Games" site:

Thanks for the 411 on this obscure arcade shmup PCB...

Yes, it's playable in Mame. It's really not too bad. Worth the money.

Nice find PCEFX. I tried it out in mame and to me it seems to be a mix of 1944, strikers, gunbird, and storm blade. Given it came out in 92, I don't think you can call it a clone of those, although Allumer has made other clone shooters before (Rezon). Its pretty damn hard too, with two loops. Downside are those stupid voices...all the time. Also $40 shipping seems excessive.

Yeah, it looks interesting - I put the opening bid on it earlier this week. Not sure I'm going to bother now - try it out in MAME and you'll see why, somehow less than the sum of its parts. From L2 onwards the plane just isn't quick enough.

I actually just tried this in MAME on a whim not long ago, and I'd like to know more about it...I tend to like "non-serious" shmups, and this one seems to fit the bill, but I don't understand how everything works...for instance, it seems that from time to time your character would say "oh yeah" and your firepower would increase for a short time, but I have no idea what makes that happen...that among other things. Is there an FAQ or any such thing out there anywhere?

That would be the roll attack.

Move the joystick one way then quickly the other and your plane powers up.
