Review: Cubic Light (PlayStation 4|5)

Post by Sturmvogel Prime »

Time to take a short break from shooting reviews, so let's talk about Cubic Light.

Like Kraftwerk said "Shimmering Neeeeeon Liiiiights"

Despite being based on the same engine as Cubic Figures, the objective is to light up a shape using blocks that mark were they will illuminate rather than using random shaped blocks. You can notice the direction on the small arrows on the sides or corners of the block you're going to use. This is important 'cos you need to figure out how and where the pieces are going to fit. Fortunately it is far more easier than Cubic Figures, so you will be making a lot of progress before quitting due to the complexity of the final levels. Speaking of levels, you'll be introduced to a new mechanic: Color Changing in order to make the piece fit in trajectory and color appropiately, and you're granted a basic assortment of colors for the color changeable white color: Red, Green, Blue and Yellow.

You wanted green pieces? Now you've got'em.

Although you're given various colors, the game feels quite repetitive as the game throws you the same "Red and Yellow" pattern again, and again, and again, and again, and again. If you're patient enough, you'll be playing three colored puzzles on Level 33 starting with the green color and the full four colors on Level 66. I guess the developers wanted to give the player some time to practice and master the puzzles with different color combinations, but the execution just turned out to be quite boring.

Wanted more challenge? How about limited range blocks.

On Stage 47, you'll be facing a new, yet interesting challenge element: Panels with limited lighting range. While regular blocks covered all the indicated space by the arrows, this variation only has a range that varies from 1 to 3 lighted blocks wide. Learning about this becomes essential in this game as it will be the dominant challenge factor for the rest of the game, along with the color changing feature.
Unlike the rest of the Cubic series, Cubic Light is the game with the largest number of trophies available. ¿Do you want to get 71 trophies fast and cheap? Well, this is the game for you, even if you are a long time PS4 player or a newcomer to Sony's console, this is a very affordable trophy booster, and far more entertaining than the rest of "Shovelware" and Trashware 'cos the Cubic series at least are enjoyable despite their simplicity.

Light up those trees.

Graphically is pretty much the same as the previous Cubic games, and mostly Cubic Figures as we have this starry/space background that matches the light-up nature of the game along with the LED-like lighting effects in the panels that make them look like a modern take of the Lite-Brite toy of the 80s. The level clear transition makes this flashing to white effect and turns revealing the next level. It's a simple yet nice visual effect that manages to amaze the player. The sound department utilizes the song "Frozen Star" by Kevin McLeod. For a copyright free song, its becoming a synonym of this series of games.

CUBIC TRIVIA
- Of all the series, this entry is the one with the most trophies available.

I've just played the game for the trophies.

Cubic Light might be another take on the "Cubic" engine like the previous games, but it still manages to be a simple, yet entertaining and challenging game despite its 3 dollar price. ¿Shall I recommend this game?, The answer is "of course", For a puzzle game, it is very easy to learn and its quite fun to play with. ¿Who could imagine that such a simple game would be entertaining? To be honest, I really had fun breaking my head with those light up puzzles.
