A perfect console
A perfect console
For me a perfect console would have the size of a slimline dvd player with wireless controllers, with dvd player compatability offcourse.
I know about japan, it has to be small, but for outside of Japan I'd say Nintendo tackle the dvd market and release your WII as a slim line dvd player. You see Sony will not cut into it's own dvd player market, but Microsoft and Nintendo can, why don't they?
That way they not only compete with Playstaion but also every dvd player manufacturer.
No?

Yes.
What's cool about the 360 is that the HD-DVD add-on will be out in November. Supposedly at $150 which is a steal for HD-DVD playing capabilities for anyone that already got a 360 almost a year ago.
PS3, I'm pretty skeptical about. I mean if a blu-ray player costs $800 NOW it will probably be much cheaper by the time the PS3 comes out anyway, and none of the games that interest me on it are coming out before next April.

There will never be such a thing. The closest thing to a truly perfect console would be some sort of gaming system wired to your nervous system ala "The Matrix".
But even then, some folks would say that sucked.
But even then, some folks would say that sucked.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

My perfect cosole:
Strictly 2-D with a super charged 68000 processor. Cartridge based. Variable resolution setting (but mostly 320X224 or whatever the MegaDrive/Neo-Geo's resolution was). VGA and RGB output. Hundreds of thousands to millions of color display capability. X-Box 360 comparable sound quality. Stock controller just like the Saturn controllers (Japanese) with rumble feature. Mostly Japanese developer support. Capable of displaying TONS of sprites and layers of parallax. Scaling and rotation of everything, sprites and backgrounds. Made by Sega. Call it the GigaDrive.

Since we're daydreaming, here's my wishlist for a perfect console:
1) No moving parts - durability is key.
2) Have the storage space at least comparable to modern systems
3) No battery backup - use standard memory cards (SD, Compactflash, whatever - just something easy and cheap to get)
4) A controller with the layout of a saturn 2d pad, but the side grips of a gamecube controller. If you can fit analog sticks somewhere in there, go for it.
5) Console have the dimensions of a PC engine
6) No region lockout!

A combination of a top-end console, the old Nintendo R.O.B and smart AI - good enough to give you a run for your money in vs games, a good teammate in co-operative, and courteous enough to pause and get you a fresh cold beer when you run out.howmuchkeefe wrote:Everything I'd want in a console has already been mentioned, except maybe beer/soda refrigeration compartments.

Well, I got people to do that for me. That statement really angers me. Why? any pc is the worst console ever build. I chanllenge anyone to name a console ever released that is worst. OK maybe that handheld from Tiger is worst.icycalm wrote:I hate to break it to you guys. The perfect console is a powerful PC.

I don`t get that, not at all. At first, a PC is not a console. Are you talking about emulation, Icy? Or about PC games? If you are meaning the first one, than I have to agree. I love emulation, and with the huge amount of controllers and joysticks that can be converted in use with an emulator, and play nearly everything from old Atari Games to Gameboy to Genesis to arcade games, I already have my perfect console (until my SNES->USB converter arrives, that is).D wrote:Well, I got people to do that for me. The only problem that PCs have are maybe, much like comparing sythesizers to samplers, a bit faceless, without character from the start, lacking the emotional connection, - but that`s the downside of versitality (versatile....versitale? -damnit). Holding a end-80ies Gameboy in your hand with Marioland plugged in, the warmth that this gives is nothing you can get from any GB-emulator (though the warmth comes from the batteries that are overheating from the extended playing session).
And being extremely sensitive towards tube radiation, I am glad to be able to play so many games and NOT have to stare into a huge light bulb that gives me headaches that last for two days. After all, a PC is a tool without specific dedication, so if you play DoDonpachi or Solitaire on it is up to you. And mine cost me about 400 Euro, and I do my work any my internet stuff with it too, so it`s a bargain.

About that PC comment, I am talking about emulation, of course, as well as about plain normal PC games. I shouldn't have posted it really, because it would take me at least a page if not more to fully explain myself, and I just can't do it right now.
But briefly, I remember when I was younger and there was this debate about whether consoles or home computers (Commoder/Spectrum/Amstrad and later Amiga, Atari ST) where preferable for gaming. For the longest time during the late 80s-early90s, many kids with limited funds were agonizing over this--I know I did.
And then the old home computers were overtaken by consoles in the arcade game genres, and by PCs in the flight sim, strategy, western RPG, ect genres. And basically the whole argument ended because from then on PC and console games belonged to different genres.
Since then, I have seen consoles die one after the other (literally sometimes) and the PC scene has kept growing--devouring them, it would seem, in the form of emulation.
One day there simply won't be any consoles left, and all we'll have is a PC--or, to be more precise, the future equivalent of the current home computer. The days of video game consoles are numbered. In that respect the PC is the ultimate console.
I could say a lot more on this, and support my view from a hardware perspective as well (that, for example a properly-equipped and configured PC is superior to a Mega Drive, or a Neo Geo, or if it isn't now it soon will be, etc. etc.)
edit: also, i hear those comments about PCs being faceless, etc. But if you see the things people are doing with case-modding (making PCs that look like a skull for instance, or like an HR Giger sculpture), you realize that they can be imbued with much more personality than a mass-produced console, or a 360 with a bunch of stickers and a Paris Hilton faceplate.
Finally, I've heard people say that playing roms or Amiga disk images gives them an empty feeling. They like to hold the box and leaf through the manual, etc etc. I understand them. I usually feel the same way. But games are really a bunch of 1s and 0s, and there were no boxes or manuals in the arcades I grew up with, so whatever...

A pc fanboy
My father is just like you. It's like you own some big industrial digging machine and you keep mentioning that your engine produces more horse power than my car. If it was what is the most powerfull then the pc would win. But power is not important at all. And that's the sad thing about you, my father and all other pc fanboys. You are blinded by marketing and nurdish grinning pc sales guys. the only thing pc's are good for are non-gameplay games like those sim city perspective rpg's. If you like that then do it with a pc. Offcourse most of us have pc's and we can do games on them, but an self consious honest shmember should say that pc's generally suck.
Sorry for the useless battle here. I hate pc's and you think that pc is better than any console. I could write a book about what's wrong with pc's and the industry and blind MS adoring fan boys

I've been buying almost every console that came out since 85 (though I've also built at least a dozen PCs in that time). Also, my collection of consoles/games easily dwarfs my collection of computer hardware/games.
I am also not a "self conscious honest shmember". I enjoy a good shmup exactly as much as anything else--RPGs, beat 'em ups, platformers, puzzle games and racing games, strategy and simulations--you name it.
You are the shmup/console fanboy here, along with a great majority in this forum--not me.
edit: Also, if you read my whole post instead of skimming it, you'd have noticed that I never once mentioned power in connection with PCs. It's not their power that makes the outlast consoles--it's their long life and versatility.
This reminds of jp and his PS2-hating. Everyone in the forum and their mothers came out to tell him that PS2 is one of the best shmup systems around. Well, the PC is THE best shmup system around. There's simply nothing else out there that can touch the amount and quality of shumps on that platform.
Discussion is fun.
Better yet I am.............your father
If the show fits..... If it doesn't sorry. that's what I was so surpprised about anyway, finding pc fanboy in this forum, sorry.D I am not a fanboy. That was a pretty cheap shot, man.
Yes, but I am a jamma fanboy now. I am a, yes that's right, a has-been console fanboy. You are the shmup/console fanboy here, along with a great majority in this forum--not me.

what do you mean by this then:power in connection with PCs. It's not their power that makes the outlast consoles--it's their long life and versatility.
and you just insinuated it again it again:a properly-equipped and configured PC is superior to a Mega Drive, or a Neo Geo
It's not their power
huh? There is not one console with a shorter life span than a pc.it's their long life
OK, I believe you, I've never played a real shmup on the pc, so I will take your word for it that the pc is THE best shmup system around. I have to tell all my friends.[/quote]This reminds of jp and his PS2-hating. Everyone in the forum and their mothers came out to tell him that PS2 is one of the best shmup systems around. D, I am not sure of what "marketing" of PCs you are talking about. I bought my first PC from some other guy, and this one here from some small shop in a small street for 400 euro. There was no marketing to me involved; I just wanted and needed a new one, after 5 years with the old.
Compared to the massive XBox 360 campaign in some countries, I don`t know how you should market "the PC" to people. A console is made by one manufacturer, but PCs are made by so many different companies from so many countries that there is a huge liberty in this market.
Saying that the PC is the best game machine (not console, please) is a bit of a stretch - while I technically play nearly all of my shmups on my PC, I know they weren`t MADE for the PC.
And, let`s not forget that many shmuppers were introduced and addicted to this niche genre via both the internet and emulation. Sure there are those that grew up with arcades, but I am a console player since my childhood.
I think it`s great how old games are kept alive and kicking via emulation - without needing to deal with consoles that fall apart when you sneeze because they have been loved to death. Without emulation and the internet a big deal of retro gaming would be missing. It`s making the gaming world richer. Saying that emulation is ripping the soul out of the games is like saying you should not be allowed to listen to the Beatles on your iPod because the Beatles only sound right on 1970s scratched vinyl. Gameplay keeps being great even emulated. Playing Alien Soldier and Bangai-O on my emu caused me to buy Ikaruga, Astro Boy and Gunstar Super Heroes, so what`s better - NOT emulating and never knowing about how great Treasure games are? It`s too bad the industry is waking up this late, but at least Nintendo does the step in the right direction with the wii retro service.
Of course there are always people that want the n00bs to piss off so they can keep talking about Sanwa parts and dip switch settings (no offense here), but Shmups can only stay a least bit popular if it is made accessible by one way or another. And even if only one out of then people that play a emulated game gets into the genre and BUYS games (or, more interesting, keeps buying all those nice Saturn pads which are out of stock right now when I need a new one
) then is strenghtening the retro game community.

Awesome. Except I wouldn't mind if it was CD and I don't care who it's made by. With a really quality looking case, just to be perfect.
I don't know why people have got to argue about it. It's a hypothetical thread. That's the internet for you.

I don't wanna piss off noobs.
And emulation is great, but I still hate pc's in general.
Leave it up to me to turn it into a I hate pc's thread. Who started this?
me?
OK sorry, so nobody wants a console that looks like a dvd player? OK I guess it's just me who doesn't want something like a loud console sticking out in my audio video setup. I want to be able to hide the controllers too in my couch. 4 of them all wireless. You don't know I have a console untill I take out the controllers. Oh well I guess I have to make it myself. I could take an old style ps2 and stuff it into a dvd player shell
I'm not ashamed of consoles, I mean not really............OK I am damnit, who am I kidding. Am I turning into my father? He thinks consoles are for babies and pc's are for men. Sorry for the now useless thread I just wanted to know if I was alone, it appears I am.

personally i'd like a console with a dedicated physics processor and a main cpu(s) with a stronger focus on out of order processing (in order, like the cell and xenon make things like AI harder to do well, so i hear). also with memory cards/controllers all plugging in via a standard usb2 port (so you can say use a flash drive for a memory card or 1 controller and 5 memory cards or 4 controllers and 2 memory cards)), and a drive that reads cd/dvd-R with out modding for easy distrobution of indie games.
being fairly compact and having a low power consumption would be nice too i suppose.
also as far as 2D goes. there's a very simple solution. 2 dimensional polygon models (the darwinians in darwinia e.g.) and put what ever you want on it as a texture map, instead of sprites use a couple polygons in the shape of whatever and constrain everything to a single plane, thus you don't have to constrain the consoles 3d abilities but you can still put a couple million things on screen, after all if you build a console that sucks at 3d you only limit the types of games you can make for it.
