PCE, SegaCD/32X Shooters

Post by SheSaidDutch »

Hi and greetings to everyone at shmups :)

I was wondering What shooters would you recommend for the Sega CD/32X and the PC Engine.

So far.... onthe PCE I've played the star solider series and gunhead, I truly love these games :)

Just for the record could you list PCE CD titles,

I think there's one pseudo-shmup for it, but I don't think it's any good.

PCE CD:
Spriggan (Very similar to MUSHA and Robo Aleste, possible better)
L-Dis
Sapphire
Star Parodier
Lords of Thunder
Gate of Thunder (This one's also on HuCard, actually)
Hellfire S

Well, you might be interested with Kolibri, the best hummingbird based shmup ever made for the 32X.

And am I the only one that enjoyed Keio's Flying Squadron on the Sega CD?
Trek trough the Galaxy on silver wings and play football online.

PCE's mostly for collectors...highly priced, but not much there.

Excellent Gradius conversion and Final Blaster are my favorites...I never liked gunhed, soldier blade is ok, takes too long to get hard, same with super star soldier.

Sega CD has lords of thunder which is ok. PCE cd has it too.

PCE also has ports of Raiden, Fantasy Zone, Detana Twinbee, Salamander, and an updated version of Xevious. Umm, the stand alone PC Engine Core Grafx system and the US TG-16 aren't highly priced and some good imports like Detana Twinbee and Xevious can be picked up for fairly cheap. Now if you are looking for the CD stuff, it's a different story. From what I have seen, the Japanese Turbo Duos are cheaper than the US ones. I think some of the ebay sellers are selling US games and systems at inflated prices. Bullseye_Games_Collectables has put up a Raiden that had thre same picture used for three different buy it now auctions and slightly different prices and conditions.

Actually there are good games for the 32x: Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racer, Star Wars Arcade, and Shadow Squadron.

And of course the best hummingbird shooter (according to Penny Arcade): Kolibri.

That 32X "Shmup-like " game is called Kilabri...or something like that. Anyway, you're a Humming Bird. Gameplay is similar to Bangai-o. (not too great)

Gate of Thunder on HuCard!!?? :? I've never heard or seen that...
I'm willing to bet thats a typo!

Super Star Soldier

Blazing Lazers/Gunhed

Jap Hucards:

Twinbee

Parodius

Gradius

Salamander (aka Life Force)

Well, the only game on the 32X that can be remotely classified as a shooter is Kolibri and even it many times feels more like Ecco the Dolphin than a shooter since you can backtrack left and right and up and down until boss time. It's pretty boring IMO.

For the SCD, there's only 6 shooters:
Android Assault/Bari Arm (awesome)
Sol-Feace (awesome, although many would beg to differ on account of its simplicity)
Lords of Thunder (awesome)
Robo Aleste (awesome)
Silpheed (mediocre)
Keio Flying Squadron (great, esp. for cute-em-up fans)

For PCE, some of the good ones include:
Gate of Thunder
Winds of Thunder/Lords of Thunder
Spriggan
Spriggan mk2
Image Fight II (well, maybe only I like this game...)
Macross 2036

Eh, nope, afraid not. No other "shooters" on the 32X. And certainly no other hummingbird games. Maybe you were thinking of Virtua Hamster, the other oddball title that was never released?

Dude, the PCE is like the king of shmup consoles. There's no way anyone can give you a complete list here, there's like hundreds of em, from the good to the obscure. Here's just a small sample of those that weren't mentioned: Cotton, Download, Raxyanber, Sinistar, Dead Moon, Cybercore, Air Zonk, Aldynes, Zero Wing, Darius, Nexzr, etc etc etc etc etc etc...

Fair warning: the 32X version of Star Wars Arcade is really quite wretched.

Well, these two have been mentioned, I enjoyed them much and happen to have a compulsion to post. Someone make me stop!

Dig around for Silpheed and Android Assault on the Sega CD. Neither are that expensive (I found the latter at a flea market for $5; I brought it home, popped it in, and promptly died). Silpheed is alright, but it has some HOLY F*CK(!) scripted moments that I've not yet seen be matched. Android Assault is just a blast. Happy hunting.

Star Wars Arcade 32x is not wretched. It's a good showcase of the 32x, but the game is extremely difficult and on rails. I like SW Arcade, but like Shadow Squadron more as it isn't on rails and has Wing Commander-like missions.

Android Assault is good fun. It's Sega's answer to GATES OF THUNDER. While I consider GATES to be better, Android Assault is a good horizontal shmup for the SegaCD.

I think he's talking about the conversion since yes, Star Wars Arcade in the arcade looks infinitely better than the 32X version. At least Virtua Racing Deluxe had extra stuff and Virtua Fighter didn't look that good originally. SWA went from awesome mapped polygons to big blocks.

Don't forget Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 on the 32x... an isometric shmup.

p.s. Kolibri is awesome. Yes it's Ecco with a hummingbird, and admittedly not as good as Ecco, but still damn cool. And I have to agree with the general consensus here... by far the best hummingbird shmup on the 32X! :P

I was wondering if anybody else remembered this. It's known as Parasquad in Japan, and is basically the 32X's answer to Viewpoint.

Actually, someone on the old forum had a complete list of each and every PCE shmup, CDs included. I have it printed out and use it as a checklist of sorts. I could type it out if there's any interest for it.

Anyway, some of my favourite PCE shmups:

Side Arms (can't believe nobody mentioned this yet)
Nexzr
Gate Of Thunder
Lords Of Thunder
Soldier Blade
Spriggan
Star Parodia
W-Ring
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

If you have time I would love that list

btw I loved the old forum, I used to read most of the posts 8)

Nexzr *I've played Recca* This one I've got to try,

btw How much do these PCE games cost? I dont care for complete set(s), just the actual games.

Yes I was reading all those replies too and wondering why people were not mentioning the 32X Zaxxon sequel. This was a 32X-exclusive sequel wasn't it?

Anyone here played it long enough to form an opinion of it?

Thanks Ghegs for your time to find that list I'm greatful :D

Thanks to everyone's input and suggestions,8)
I Shall be trying some that have been mentioned *currently using an Emu*

How expensive Is the Turbo Duo exactly? and then those upgrades and CD's

I dont care for complete sets etc, I'd rather have just the actual game, How would that affect the price? Would there be a big difference?
