On the shmup front there's the underappreciated Harmful Park, if you haven't tried that...

I don't know if it's underrated/obscure enough, but you might also want to try Landmaker (released as "Builder's Block" in the US), I sought it out via the "Puzzle Games Thread" here, and while it's not perfect it's fast become a favorite puzzler of mine. The arcade version is playable in MAME if you want a taste of it: the PS1 port is pretty close, but has an unfortunate amount of load time.

Here are a couple of PSX game titles to search for...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

You might want to give Agetech's budget PSX release, "Top Shop", a try on your PSX/PSone setup...it's a very fun game, especially with more than one player, all the merrier. ^_~

If you haven't tried out Squaresoft/positron's "iS: internal section" Tempest-like shooter for the Japanese PSX, then you're in for a very special treat via silky smooth 60 frames-per-second presentation in 16-bit graphics mode & 640 x 480 "high" resolution mode. Welcome to devil's kaliedelscope is the tagline of internal section... Squaresoft USA was planning on releasing internal section for the USA market but never did so... it would've been regarded as a uber-cool PSX underground title for it's overall graphic-designer revsionist stylistic presentation..... ^_~

I'm about to work on a big and fairly comprehensive (by my personal standards of course) list of PS1 games worth owning over at Fanitsu. I'll dig up this thread and post a link when I'm done. This will take a couple weeks at best.

Yeah, I've heard good things about Policenauts, and I'd love to get my hands on IS.

It'd be great to have a PS1 Shooting Special, now that we have one's for the Saturn, DC, and Neo Geo.

lots of good shit for PS. Crap that I like, off the top of my head:

Metal Slug X
Mr. Driller G
Landmaker
Money Puzzle Exchanger
Umihara Kawase (thanks Undamned and 05pro for helping me get these)
Toaplan Shooting Battle 1 (Tiger Heli)
Raiden DX
G. Darius
Pop 'n pop
Donpachi
Rainbow Islands

Have yet to try the Puyo Puyo Sun port

Sad thing is, I only have decent scores in the puzzlers. Not enough hours in a day. Argh.

Neon posted lots of great stuff already, so the only game I can think of right now would be Tokimeki Memorial Taisen Puzzledama.

Metal Slug X for PS is the worst port of it, tho still a fine game of course.

Didn't care for Unholy War.

More for the list:

Kitchen Panic
Geppy X
Panzer Bandit
Gunners Heaven (absolutely essential for action gamers)

The way the character runs in Syphon Filter is ghetto.

Skullmonkeys is pretty sweet.
Trap Gunner is ok too.
No One Can Stop Mr Domino was good last time I saw it, been ages tho.

Interesting stuff. I'd like to get Toaplan Shooting Battle 1, but I'm pretty sure it only works on a J-PS1, and my PS1's modded.

Kitchen Panic looks interesting; what does that involve? Anyone played Death Wing?

I really dig Neo Geo's Double Dragon, but, AFIK, the PS1 port is inferior to the Neo Geo CD port. (Diddo with Powerslave, compared to the Saturn port.)

I will be getting Star Ixiom soon, but I've read that it's heavy on Japanese.

Ridge Race Revolution is my fav. RR game on the PS1, and Star Blade Alpha is very cool. It doesn't control as well as the arcade rev. but there is a rapid fire cheat.

At any rate, this is a great thread! I'd love to know more about any of the rare PS1 games from this site:

http://www.digitpress.com/archives/didy ... shmups.htm

that have not already been mentioned in this thread.

Sorta, you have Rez visuals but a Tempest clone in gameplay.

Anyway, for graphical adventures, on the US end, I think Discworld is one of the few that stands out and actually motivated me to figure out the puzzles. And I feel that Exodus Guilty is the only non-Konami JP adventure that has an interesting story (and no dating/schoolgirl crap).

All the lesser known JP shooters on the PS range from weak to mediocre really. Note that the bottom half of the games on that page by Greg Wilcox are rail shooters.

In fact, iS: internal section was one of the few PSX shooting titles that was the inspiration for the cult classic of Rez for the DC & PS2 platforms. The other two PSX games that play similar to internal section are Nanotek Warrior & N2O.

Squaresoft did release an official internal section strategy guide to get the most out this uber-cool shooter for the Japanese market. ^_~

N2O has some cool graphic design visuals worth checking out. And it even some Japanese kanji script was placed there as well to give it a cool overall presentation. ^_~

my PS1 is modded, too, and it runs perfectly on it.

my recommendation:
N2O aka Nitrous Oxider - same principle as Tempest X3 and Internal Section, but a lot better, not only graphically, but also with a challenging score system. Also, it´s a lot cheaper than Internal Section.

I think Tomba! and it's sequel are pretty solid platformers, it reminds me a bit of Super Adventure Island 2 on the SNES in the way it's a platformer combined with RPG elements (collecting/using items, weapon upgrades, talking to ppl) with a kind of tropical setting to it. The games were made by a company called Whoopee Camp, which was founded by by Tokuro Fujiwara; the man responsible for the design on classic games like Bionic Commando and the Ghost n Goblins series.
I think they're quite underrated since I haven't read a lot about it or hear gamers mention the quality of these games.

I know, but I love rail shooters.

What I have against N2O is the fact that I've never listened to any music from the Crystal Method. So if it's bad, then I'm stuck with it for the entire game!

Tomba does sound pretty interesting-if it's anything like SNES Super Adventure Island 2, then I would assume it has some RPG elements in it?

Thanks for the great link, Gaijin! Didn't know there were any Goemon games for the PS1; I've only played the two Famicom titles. I have read that Silhouette Mirage is a lot better on the Saturn.

It would be interesting to know what all the games on all 6 Sunsoft Memorial Series discs are.

TSB1 definately works on a modded PSone perfectly. I had it for years with no problem.

Its the PS2 systems which have backwards compatibiliity issues with the game. I think it runs one of the games at half speed.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
