(PC) 横STG VS 縦STG (Horizontal STG VS Vertical STG)

Post by beam »

Apart from GuwangeDash there's another shmup, this time horizontal, which incorporates/parodies many other games' ships/enemies/shots/systems. But this game is also crossed with Genetos !
The more you collect items the more ships you get to play with, it's called "EVOL Mode".

Download link

List of available ships :
Axelay
Batsugun

G-Darius
Game Tengoku (Game Paradise)

Some non shmup games incorporated in the gameplay:
Final Fantasy
Rockman 2 (megaman 2)

and some anime too
Top O Nerae 2 (Gunbuster 2)

I am sure i forgot some games, there are too many too mention all of them !

There are 2 main modes a Free Mode (training mode) and an Omake game :
- Arcade Mode : accumulate points to "evolve" the character and collect blue items. Chain the enemies to get bonus combo points.

- Super Arcade Mode : level up to gain experience, there are gene mutations.
There are branching stages as in Darius games.
There's rank related to the ship rank value, the number of remaining life(s), the frequency of evolutions, the "genetic" use during the credit.
Defeat an enemy or boss to get exp. Depending on the ship the exp will change. There's a green light to go up to a certain level that can be cancelled when it's glowing (see "Degeneration" below).
Evolution "gauge" gene varies by color. The status will change depending on the color.

[Red]
Number: increased by damage done to the enemies and bosses.
Status: Attack power increases by 25%.
Bonus: Defeat the enemy score UP.

[Blue]
Number: increased by using bombs or by grazing.
Status: Kasli determination is 1.25 times.
Bonus: Graze score UP.

[Green]
Number: increased by comboing or by pushing the shot button for a certain time.
Status: increase maximum combo time limit to HP*1.5.
BONUS: score combo bonus option.

[Yellow]
Number: increase when you take no damage.
Status: recovers HP.
Bonus: Obtain no damage bonus points in a period of time.

[Purple]
Number: The shorter the rise time boss the faster damages rise
Status: show the mask of collision.
Bonus: increase Bonus Boss.

[Blue]
Number: Collect items and evolve.
Status: increase the speed of item collection.
Bonus: item score increase.

Mutation : there's a probability of 1 / 100 mutate. When this occurs the speed or HP may be changed at ramdom. When a ship is close to mutation the ship's rank value may change (with some exceptions).

Degeneration : you can go a previous state of evolution.
- by pressing the "change button" when no ship is glowing green.
- If any one can translate this, you're welcome :)
進化 or 突然変異」を行うとプレイヤーには見えない「遺伝値」が上昇します。(「ランク値」/2+1の値が上昇)
この遺伝値はダメージを受けると、-1されます。この値が0以下になると強制的に退化します。
- Omake : an hori which plays like Gaplus/Galaga 3/Space Invader with evolutions, bonus item and more !

Extends are fixed at every 3 miilion points.

Bonus score :
- Gradius series: put the capsule near the power box
- Parodius series: yellow bells worth +1000 power points
- Darius series: shot LV15 + Bomb one item for 1,000 points
- R-type/Thunder Force series: shoot the enemy bullets
- GigaWing : "bounce" the bullets
- Metal Black: use the beam and destroy the enemies with it
- Rayforce: Score on the max lock
- Fantasy Zone: Kill every enemies which drop coins. Score is decreased when coins bounce on the ground
- Psyvariar: level up more than 100

There's a gameplay video with title screens from some of the original games to show the ships origin and remixed shmup soundtracks. This game doesn't have any ripped graphics/musics/sfx. The author remade everything on the horizontal plane !

Yes but it's a really well coded vert !

Maybe it's in there, I don't know. There are too many games to be sure. Like I wrote the list is not complete. It's just names I got on the developper's blog and some game sessions.

Same here- this looks great but I was getting about 4fps in between the random freezes.
My setup's pretty low end (XP SP3, 2Ghz Athlon, 768Mb RAM and 256Mb AGP GeForce) but it doesn't have any problems with Crimzon Clover or GwangeDash .
Shame cos it would be fun to figure out what all those menus mean and get playing!

I found this game several months ago and didn't like it a bit. Insufferable input lag, ripped sprites everywhere, dull and soulless stage design, tons of bugs that make you wonder whether the author even did any playtest, you name it. I hope they did improve the gameplay after I tried it, but I highly doubt the improvement will be significant enough to make it actually worth playing.

It definitely seems like more of a "See how much shmup crap we can cram into one game" rather than anything serious. I made some blah comments about Guwangedash already, but this is like 100 times worse.

We need a new term for these, mashshmups maybe? XF-R can join in, too :P

Mash 'em Ups! And bring them on!!!
I love this stuff! Even if it can be a bit of a mess. I would've liked to try this one out, but it just didn't want to run. I would like to see if it also had enemies from other games also, or if it was straight Gradius through out. I'm not one for horis, but the ship list looked neat. I stuttered through a level of the evolution mode, that was really cool how your ship changed into ships from other games! That was a very cool ideal, and an interesting way to have a ship power up. Very cool. Would like to see that in Guwange dash.
Would like to play some more XF-R, gonna have to check the thread to see how the current version is.
I've had a problem before getting a keyboard to controller hack working for that. Too much labor makes for painfull keyboarding, and I'm total garbage on a keyboard. Even a stick for that matter.

Of course it does! Just rotate the coffee cup and therefore spill the coffee crap over!

Oh wait, apparently I've done that already.

Not exactly sure that I wrote a glowing review there, guy. I was just saying that the evolution mode was a good ideal. If you have a game where you put the effort into making allot of ships, most players are going to pick one early on, and stick with that. Having them change into other ships, instead of power ups, is a great ideal. It gets the player to try all of the other ships, and it can help sort some of the balance issues by having the stronger ships appear later in the game.
I like fan service, that's the ideal, right? To have fun, this kind of stuff makes me smile. I enjoy it, it excites me. I don't need to be all serious about it. I can have my way with it, and cast it aside when I'm done.
It's not a bad thing to be positive, I'm a happier person because of it. Why the hell do I want to cry like a little girl about everything? Nobody will ever take you serious if you only complain about everything.

What ever happened with that Xeno Fighters game anyway?

It was like a Raiden Fighters mashup with a bunch of other ships and some mechanics from other games.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

G-Type is still the best mashmup, similarly to how 'mashmup' is the best word to describe this form.

I took a pass on this when the OP thread put this massive post in the GwangeDash thread to begin with (after all I was already busy playing :P) and thought I'd try this one out.

Spent a while trying to get the program to even work, then couldn't figure out any of the options from the Japanese, and when I finally started to get the hang of it the game crashed on the third stage (R-Type boss as its shadow, and all the graphics changed to handrawn monochrome stuff nonetheless).

In all seriousness I think this is a really good idea gone wrong. GwangeDash and Xeno Fighters R shouldn't even be compared to this, they're leagues of quality above this in terms of game execution and programming stability. The closest thing I can think of to this (in terms of idea) is Genetos which was really well done. Maybe in future releases it might become more accessible to people as a solid program at the very least, and then the rest of its mechanics can be ironed out into something beautiful but at the moment it's not looking that good.

Amen to that. If the developer of GwangeDash could get that xenophobia pole out of his ass at the very least the TLB could get fixed.

A video of GwangeDash that was on nicovideo got taken down (copyright holder message, implying it *might* have been Cave or just some ass website admin avoiding potential court case that would never have happened) and the author of GwangeDash freaked and put a clamp on the whole thing. He was being anti-gaijin long before that happened though, and it really shows in some of the responses to people here asking why he didn't want people outside of Japan playing the game.

Yeah- once the author of GwangeDash had twigged that westerners (and a lot on this forum) were downloading and enjoying the game releases, he started posting stuff about the game only being played in Japan, changed the .exe so it would only work with Japanese settings, changed the password for the downloads and gave clues to it that only Japanese speakers would be able to work out, changed the licence on the final version from copyleft to copyright and then finally forbade distribution of the game at all.
It's very interesting that it's a copyright issue here that has nothing to do with money (for a change!)- the author is exercising his intellectual property rights to prevent us from playing the game at all, a bit like Stanley Kubrick forbidding the screening of A Clockwork Orange.
I KNOW that copyright violation is not acceptable on this forum but it's such a great game that it deserves to be made widely available again and have a hi score thread eh?

Meanwhile 横STG VS 縦STG is still pants :D

I thought he was afraid of legal issues from westerners playing it. Oh well.

Also the idea of him copyrighting something that so obviously takes stuff from other games is pretty hilarious, to me at least :P

I know this thread is quite old, but I wonder if any folks know how to make configurations so that the exe version works with Windows 10 and 11.

Saw the game and felt curious about that work. On the discord channel, Someone knows the latest version link:
https://beatthegame.net/o/yokoSTG_VS_ta ... 120225.zip

Also guide for installing locale:
https://github.com/xupefei/Locale-Emula ... .5.0.1.zip

Download, install for current user, close install window, right click on the game exe file, and select run in Japanese (admin), and the game runs fine on Windows 10 and 11.
