Intel onboard graphics VGA 480p output issues with UVC

Post by emphatic »

I'm trying to use a computer (well, several ones) to output 480p to my Ultracade UVC. It works just fine with my XBox 360 and my Dreamcast, and using a HDMI->VGA converter, I can get a perfect image no problem. But for some reason, using the VGA port it doesn't work.

Anyone got theories?

Do you have any VGA cables that omit pin #9? That’s my first guess… not sure if your UVC handles both VESA 640x480p and SMPTE 720x480p, but I assume “yes”

Interesting... Maybe it's the UVC that doesn't have the #9 pin, meaning the computer can't gather EDID info, then refusing to output the signal? Also worth mentioning is that the UVC can accept 800x600 or 1024x768 from the same VGA port, it's just the 480p (that I must have for some games) that doesn't work.

AFAIK pin 9 usually carries 5 volts, and for whatever reason it seems to freak out some devices when it’s present - my friend had a HDMI to VGA that they thought wasn’t working, but when they tried a VGA cable without pin 9 (the HDMI to VGA used external power instead) everything was fine!

I’m not sure if that’s your problem, here, though! Curious if it handles 640x480p fine, in which case maybe it is the 720x480p from those consoles. Does the 360 have a separate mode over VGA called 640x480 versus its mode just called ‘480p’? I would try that, or 640x480p from a PC if you can

The 360 works just fine in 480p, it's just the PC that brings me trouble. I will try to see if I can get rid of the 9th pin (I have plenty of VGA cords to experiment with) to see if that makes any difference.

But just to be perfectly clear: Without changing cords or anything, the same PC works fine in 1024x768, 800x600, but doesn't work in 640x480. All resolutions are 60hz. So unless the 6th pin is being triggered by this resolution alone, I don't know what's up...

Thanks again for your help.
