Samsung SSC-14 Security Monitor RGB/s-video mod + tuning Q's

Post by VHS_Jess »

So I recently picked up this NOS security monitor and am trying to work out how to mod it. I've done some reading/watching on the subject but I'm having some trouble wrapping my head around everything. The jungle chip is a Philips TDA8374A with r/g/b in + "RGB insertion input" which I assume(?) is blanking. It also has luma and chroma in. The only inputs it has on the back of the chassis are composite in/out, and the jacks for security cameras. I'm wondering if its possible to add both inputs? Like I said, I'm having trouble parsing all information online about modding sets, but I know how to solder and I really want to give this lovely little monitor some higher quality inputs.

There is a board mounted on the side that connects to the front panel controls, and (I think) has to do with the quad display of security cameras mode. The monitor has two modes, one for viewing all 4 camera inputs, and "vcr" mode for composite in.

There is also a weird little quirk with this monitor where it always has a little "VCR" text at the top left of the screen when displaying composite. I'm terrified that over time it would burn in and I was hoping that there is a way to disable it.

I also have no idea how to adjust the picture. There is no option in the menu, there are no pots on any board inside it, and the documentation that it came with is just for basic setup/operations. The included pictures are from my Wii over composite, which I'm fine with, but when I connect my ps2 over composite the picture is shifted really far to the right. Outside of service menus and looking for adjustment pots I have no idea what to try to fix it.

TDA-837x chips are very common and many people here, including me, have had success in modding sets with them. Now, the thing is that security monitors can be very quirky and the lack of documentation doesnt help. If you cant find the service manual, you're gonna have to visually inspect the board to see where you can inject your RGB signals, which is probably gonna be between the micom that sends the RGB/Blanking signals to the TDA-837x.

Also, pretty nice how there 4 holes at the back of the monitor, it's begging to have the BNC inputs for RGBS installed.
