getting a dog: for and against

Post by professor ganson »

My two girls want a dog. Not going to happen. At least not until they're old enough to take care of it.

Against:
1. I've been attacked by dogs several times. Once I had to have painful rabies shots applied directly to the wounds after I was attacked with no warning from behind by a giant black dog.
2. They stink and are messy.
3. After having two kids, I don't want to care for another living being for quite some time.
4. My cat would not like it.

For:
1. They can serve as protection.
2. They can be cute.
3. Fun to play with at times.
4. They get you to take walks.

Post pics of your dog, if you wish.

Awww, a weensy little Boston Terrier!

If only their guts weren't as rotten as their exteriors are cute. ;)

EDIT: Added wink, my brother has a Boston Terrier who's just as cute and friendly and playful as can be. He just happens to suffer from apocalyptically powerful poots.

Aaaaw! How cute! Those sweet cuddly curves... I wanna have ten of those, all across my apartement. I love Saturn controllers!

Well, kidding, obviously. Not that I don`t love Saturn pads, but that dog is ace. It looks just like the pug of a friend of mine. I love such dogs, they can look at you in such strange ways: Curious, wondering, thoughtful, pissed off.

Oh, and Ganson; most of the reason you mentioned against dogs are the reasons I don`t want kids (yet, and by yet I mean: Not later either, but who knows I change my mind about things daily). But I would rather think about my money and my nerves. Dogs are cute, Babies are cute, but I find them cute for five minutes and then they can go away again. I guess your kids will feel the same; they find them cute, but MAYBE will grow tired of the responsibility that comes with them.

On the other hand they might get a feeling what it`s like to care for loud, dirt-producing creatures themselfes.

I can`t wait to see your kids expressions when you tell them "Listen, I know you want a dog, but those guys on my arcade game forum at the internet told me not to buy you one".

(Don`t get me wrong, I love how people on the off topic post about EVERYTHING, from gay rights to learning Excel and self-produced music to posting pics of dogs...man, I love this place 8) )

I absolutely hated dogs until my family got one 4 (?) years ago. They terrorized me throughout childhood (one time I thought two dogs were going to kill me, I swear). Now I would take a dog over a cat any day. Our dog is the most family-like pet we've ever had. I still hate other people and their out of control animals, but even more the people who leave their dog whining out in the rain.

There's also this great labrador down the street and the adjacent neighbors have had the most cute, tame dogs ever. So it really is just a matter of what you see - the perfectly mannered dog, or the one tearing up a house and biting everyone.

None of the cons seem guaranteed. 1 seems particularly unlikely, bad past experiences with dogs does seem to make people reluctant to get one but it's unlikely yours would get rabies or attack you. 2 you can train them out of, though that does take effort. 4 you can't really be sure of till it's too late, it seems like. They could wind up being pretty good friends, though you know your cat better than I do of course.

If you want Prof. I'm gonna be volunteering at the SPCA this year, might be able to get you a discount (you're in VA, IIRC?)

No pets (and kids, hopefully) for me till I'm out of school w/a steady income.

Your dog stinks.

Everyone already has parasites without a dog.

Thanks, Neon, but I'm in OH, not the best place for my favorite sort of dog, those Alaskan huskies. Wouldn't be fun for them here in the summer, I assume, though I remember as a kid that there was a happy one down the block from me in sunny CA.

The other thing is that I'm slightly allergic to cats and dogs, not nearly as much as I am to dust-mites, though. Oh yeah, and my house is small-- all I need is another warm body in here.

Seriously. And the worst part is that they're usually totally oblivious to it. I hate it when people act all nonchalant when their dog goes apeshit.

Aggressive dogs scare the shit out of me when I go for walks, bike rides, etc. If I don't know you or your dog, I have no idea whether its well-trained or if it will chew my face off.

Friendly dogs are cool, though. But my lifestyle prevents me from getting one (living in an apartment, no yard, away at work all day, the fact that I'm lazy and cheap, etc.)

An old roommate of mine from Westlake had a Samoyed. As long as they mostly stay indoors during the summer and you keep your house relatively cool, I don't think Ohio weather should prevent you from getting a husky.

I have 4 dogs. I've had dogs for my whole life

http://br.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/shatte ... r=/ab21scd

None of them ever attacked anyone for no reason. They've attacked people trying to get in the back of my house, jumping through the wall, so I guess that's ok, as they were protecting the house.

They can stink, but only if you don't take care of them. Washing FOUR dogs may be tiresome, but if you have only one, and it isn't a big one, it won't be that bad. People waste more time washing their cars :)

When they are young, they are full of energy, and yeah, the can destroy your stuff. My Amiga Dune 2 disk 4 was baited by one of those dogs, and it was amazing that disk was working. My mother and sister have lost MANY shoes to another dog. This can be really annoying but, after they grow up, this usually stops (Unless you have a Labrador, which is beatiful but a pain in the ass sometimes, as they seen to NEVER grow up).

And their parasites.. well, they can give you trouble sometimes, but this will only happen if you don't care about your dog. Clean it once or twice a week (If the dog stays INSIDE your house, twice is the minimal, three times a week would be better), and if fleas or anything else happen to appear on it, just give the dog the treatment it needs, and quickly. Yes, this means spending some money in medicines indeed.

And be read for shit. Yeah, real shit, dogs poop, like any animal. To clean it may be messy sometimes.

And depending of the dog you have and the area you live, they can be noisy and annoy neighbourhs. A dog barking in the middle of night can be REALLY annoying.

Those are the main cons IMO.

But honestly, those are really small things, at least for me. A dog can give you so much love that you just won't care about everything else. And yeah, they are really cute most of the time, they are fun to play, and it's just great to get back at home and see at least someone incredibly happy just because you are back.

The only REAL bad thing about owning a dog is that it will die someday, and this day usually is a very very sad day for the family. I've lost a couple of dogs in my life, and it's hard to cope with it.

Regarding you cat, I've seen dogs and cats living together many times. If they are in the same house, that's not a issue usually. My dogs do hate cats though :)

I love dogs and cats. I had a roommate for two years (2003-2005) who had a rottweiler that lived in our apartment. That dog was really great, and very intelligent--she used to watch TV with me sometimes, and would run up and bark in front of the TV set while wagging her tail whenever she saw a dog on TV. She would also run up and bark protectively at tigers, lions, and horses on TV. Never seen a dog do that before. Rottweilers are very good companion and guard dogs, but because they are smart you have to keep them busy or they get bored which can lead to eating random things in the house or doing other mischevious things. If they are trained from birth, they are very gentle (the females anyway) and kind dogs. When I finish my PhD in a couple years, get a real professor position at a university and have a house, I might get a rotty.

Anyway I like Siberian huskies too, but I've never been in contact with one. I grew up with a Great Pyrenees mountain dog, a really beautiful pure white-haired breed, but those are sorta hard to handle as 1)they're huge, 2)they aren't too bright, 3)they're quite 'wild', and 4)they often walk by the table and eat all your food in the blink of an eye.

The sad thing about those kinds of people is that, most likely, even though they sound like they're avoiding those who can't handle their pets correctly, they haven't met any of those people.

yeah :D . I still have her, I took those pictures last week (Except the one where the german shepherd is lying in a bedroom, that one was taken like 4 or 5 years ago). she's quite old now though :) . All my dogs are females.

Edit:
And regrading Pitbulls, I must agree with Davey. Pitbulls are dangerous if handled by stupid people. And unfortunately, it seems every stupid guy has a pitbull.

It looks like those guys who goes to gym, take pills to get stronger and like to pick fights in public places always have a pitbull. Here in Brazil, those people are sometimes called the "Pitboys", heh (I dunno if this is a worldwide word or its used just here)

There were talks about banning Pitbulls from Brazil, but I think this didn't happen. But the law prohibits to let them run free on streets.

We've had a lab for 3 years now, and we were never dog-people until then. We have 4 cats, and she get's along with all of them. Of course, we got her when she was a puppy. As far as protection goes, that depends more on the breed. If you get a lab or retriever, for instance, you can forget about that; our dog would just lick anyone who broke into our house!

The problem with dogs is that they require a LOT more attention then cats, and aren't anywhere near as self-sufficient. Cats are much more solitary in the wild, and they do at least clean themselves (although brushing them helps). Dogs in the wild travel in packs, so a dog pretty much looks to it's primary owner as the leader of the pack-that's why dogs go so nuts when their owner comes home from work.

Whatever you do, or do not, decide upon, don't worry about a dog or cat giving you parasites. It's a non-issue unless you just completely fail to look after the health of the animal. Your biggest worry about any type of bug should be bedbugs; they are a major problem (at least here in the US) right now, although they haven't gotten on our dog or our cats for some reason.

My two reasons:

Image

My parents' two beagles, Imola and Minardi (yeah, we have F1 fans in the house, the one they had before was named Monza.) The nice part about them is that I get to go over and visit them whenever I want, then go home to my own non dog-trashed apartment. They're still fairly young ( about 7 months now, this picture came from about three months ago) and while not littermates they came from the same father (my sister actually owns one of Imola's littermates though, a male named Enzo, and by far the wildest of the bunch.) They can also be pretty wild at times, and roughhouse a lot (they tend to compete for attention.) I don't think I'm currently in a position where I could deal with owning a dog, but these two will do for now.
We want you, save our planet!

well, there are cases were cats and dogs live together in harmony, but you won´t know before trying. About 15 years ago, when I had a cat, I got a dog with the option to give it back when both wouldn´t stop fighting, and that´s how it turned out. But it really depends, so if you can get a dog with the option to give it back, you might want to give it a try.

@ Vexorg: that's quite a cute duo you have there. :D
That said most of them Beagles are a bit to hyperactive for my taste. An old friend of mine used to have 2 of them as well and they just almost never seemed to have a quiet/resting moment.

Also love the cute little bulldog from thesuperkillerxxx. Those always remind me of that old tv-show called Jake and the Fatman. :o

I love dogs myself too.

We have a now 12 year old crossbreed (Korean spaniel mom, and a Boxer/German shephard cross father) called Kasper.

Image
Where my mother goes, Kasper goes! :D

Image
Posing next to our well. He is just about as underfed as I am as you can see. ;)

He is about the most easy to handle dog in the world and gets along with everyone and everything (yes even cats :P). He's probably the most loved dog in the hood too as everyone and every other dog knows him and wants to play with him (even the "not so social" dogs). He's also the only dog allowed in the Elderly home further down the street where my grandmother lives.

He's a real part of our family, a great companion and always fun to play with (he's ALWAYS up for playing some ball, which is it's favourie game by far). Anyway wouldn't want to miss him for the world! :D

On topic:

argument for dogs:
- great and very loyal companions
- fun to play with, make you laugh and comfort when you are feeling down
- they can become like family

against:

- high maintainance. You have to spent some time keeping him/her busy and giving them your attention. They are cocial animals and really need this. And walking them several times a day is a must if you haven't got a huge garden.
- nothing as far as I am concerned.
