Best Way to Play Forgotten Worlds on a Budget ?

Post by Trevor spencer »

Hi

Been looking to play this game for a while but always wonder what the best option would be as I dont own a spinner.

I own a cab / supergun and a PC plus PS2

Is the ps2 one any good ? Can you map normal controls in mame ? How about that arcade stadium release ?

Or does someone do a cheap spinner that can be used with mame ?

I'm only looking to play the arcade version.

Thanks

What is a spinner? You can map whatever controls you want in mame. Map it to an Xbox wireless gamepad if you want, or use an Ultimarc Interface and map it straight to your JAMMA cab controls.

Hi

Forgotten worlds uses a spinner with a fire button in the middle to spin your character 360 and fire while controlling UDLR with a joystick.

The PS2 and console games use a button either side of the fire button to spin.

I'm looking to get the best arcade experience via the cheapest method , probably mame then if you can assign buttons to spin.

Try Mame on your cab (better yet, Groovymame) and the standard stick + 6 pushbuttons panel. It works extremely well since you can use your thumb to rotate clockwise and your third finger to rotate anti-clockwise - no need to move your fingers around, much like with any other STG, and, given that the game uses autofire, controlling the rotation will be easy enough as you'll only stop shooting the few times you need to position the weapon around your character (or release a bomb).

Most people discard this method because Mame's default analog-to-digital speed is way too low for this game, but once you speed it up and practice for 5 minutes, you'll think it's even better than the original controller.

Not sure about the capabilities of MAME, but the PC Engine port supports the Cyberstick (analog HOTAS). It uses the throttle for the rotation, and it works really damn well. If you have USB HOTAS stick, might be worth trying to replicate. Of course, an actual USB version of Cyberstick is coming, and it is the perfect Afterburner controller, so Id assume MAME will support it eventually.
