So i play these ultra-hard shmups, impossible to ever win on 1 credit.
At startup you get a message from the FBI : winners dont use drugs.

A : the FBI sells drugs ?
B : without money you can not afford drugs ?
C : if you can not win you need to try drugs, loser.

It's just a common startup message in those old arcade games. Another one is "Recycle It, Don't Trash It!"

The US was hitting it hard with the anti drug messaging back during those times. The "War on Drugs." Ads on TV all the time. The DARE program which was cops coming to your school to make drugs sound scary to kids. They also encouraged kids to rat on their friends and family if they used drugs. Studies showed that it didn't work at best or at worst made kids more likely to use drugs.

Puyo Puyo Tsuu's MD port takes the cake for VG social activism, imo. I did quite the double-take when my newly-acquired cart booted up with a "HELP STOP AIDS" blurb. Like... am I not doing that already by spending all my time playing animu vidyas?!

Not just the MD port. IIRC, the GB b/w port and the SNES Remix port have it too.

Interesting - I wonder if it was in the AC ver too. Given the MD-based hardware, and the port having an arcade-accurate DIP menu, I'd be 50% confident!

Yeah, not only was it on the arcade version, it's left intact on the Sega Ages version for Switch.

I think it was fairly common at the time in the 80s/90s to assume dark dingy arcades were drug dens. Which is why I think arcade games got all those warning screens.

My mom wouldn't let me go to my local arcade for this reason. So I had to just go to all the gas stations, pizza places, (legal) drug stores, department stores, and grocery stores to play them back then.

By the 90s my local arcade was gone. Never did see what all they had in there....

That AIDS message is in the Saturn port of Puyo 2 as well as far as I remember.

Later Atari arcade games had a "WInners don't do drugs" message - the MD Klax port has it.

Did arcade Gigawing have a drugs message too?

Just checked in MAME, the US romset of Giga Wing has the EPA "Recycle it" screen instead.
