Just curious about your controller of preference
Whatever it's an arcade stick/controller/fightstick/"ake-kon" (How many names can you call these? lol), a gamepad, keyboard, whatever
I just like hearing what people likes to use to play their games.
I recently snatched a lot of "junk" sticks from Japan and decided to give each one different flavours, to the point I dedicated a couple to certain genres or even games (I'm not a psycho, I swear)
I recently have been trying Seimitsu levers after not being happy with Sanwa in shooters, I see a lot of rave about the LSQ-40, so might see in the future what's all that about
Either way
What's your setup for comfy pew pew=numbers? Always love to see these sort of topics

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
Madcatz SF4 TE (standard Sanwa JLF with the short throw mod) stick for shmups, Hori Fighting Commander Octa for fighting games (grew up with SF2 on SNES!)
Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
I think i want to try the octa also for PS4/PS5, sold out.
I have the previous version of the hori fighting commander for platform games.
For shooters i have Nacon arcade stick, it has no autofire extras, dont buy a hori as expensive arcade-stick, low quality parts.

Mayflash F300 Elite - mostly because it works on 360, Switch, PS4, PS5 with a dongle, and PC.
I'll use joycons and a flip grip when playing portable.

I was a big fighting game player and converted to hitbox a few years ago. Now I use it for nearly all genres.

How many latency does that add to the serial-data ?,RobotParking wrote:Mayflash F300 Elite - mostly because it works on 360, Switch, PS4, PS5 with a dongle, and PC.
maybe not so much ?, i would not use that, it does add some latency.
Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
That's the newer silent Seimitsu right? I'm curious about this stick as well. I havent seen a lot of talk or feedback about it. I guess that's bc its relatively new and roughly twice the cost of an LS-32 or LS-40.RadiantAnsel wrote:I recently have been trying Seimitsu levers after not being happy with Sanwa in shooters, I see a lot of rave about the LSQ-40, so might see in the future what's all that about
I kind of got away from playing on stick once I had a family and all that partly due to the loud clickiness of an LS-32 at night. Didn't hear great things about the Sanwa silents and never preferred them for shmups anyway.
So that stick could be a gamechanger even if it's just like 90 percent as good as a regular LS-40. Also the new gate that's sort of a rounded off square gate looks very interesting. Also like that they ditched the plastic shaft cover of the regular LS-40 for solid metal.
Only way I'll get to try it is buy a new stick or a Brook board for an old stick and shell out for an LSQ-40, but I'm kinda curious if anyone's got more feedback about it first before taking the plunge. And I'm not the guy who's obsessed with the perfect stick and swapping out spring tensions etc. I like any of the stock Seimitsu's. So if the silent is reasonably close to that I think I'll be very happy and get back to playing stick like the good old days.
Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
Keyboard is the best. Too bad there probably isn't a way to use a keyboard to play STGs on my New Astro City. It's got a Seimitsu thing in there now. Not sure which one it is since I have not checked yet. I REALLY wish I could get some of those awesome Hayabusa buttons to put in the Astro without having to sacrifice a controller to get the buttons... not that I have any PCBs to put in there yet anyway. If someone has a Japanese Slap Fight PCB that they want to get rid of, let me know. A month of looking and I have yet to find one. Yes, there is one on ebay, but one of my friends who is something of a Toaplan expert says that one is either partially or entirely copied, so I don't want that one.

Steven, you could wire something like this up on your cab.

That certainly is interesting! I might have to take a look into that! Thanks!

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
I think some of the later firmware updates helped with some of the more egregious bits of input lag. It probably depends on the system, too. I haven't noticed any that was too bad, but I'm not super sensitive to it, either.heli wrote:How many latency does that add to the serial-data ?,RobotParking wrote:Mayflash F300 Elite - mostly because it works on 360, Switch, PS4, PS5 with a dongle, and PC.

I got it more because my hands were turning into little claws using my keyboard on PC.

Sega D-pads rock. And when I feel like plugging one in and dealing with the size and posture, a nice arcade stick. I like classic American parts and a variety of Japanese parts as well.

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
I currently use Logitech F310 pad and it's serviceable so far, nice d-pad although it has this slight problem and feels like it will break easily if you use it for constant hard fighting game usage
.
I rarely use pad for shmups in general because keyboards always give me sharp precision when moving around especially in diagonal movement.

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
"Junk" in Japanese often just means its used and untested. I bought a bunch of HRAPs a couple years ago for around 1000 yen each, and even though I replaced the stick/buttons and used them for padhacks and a Brook board, that was cheaper/easier than buying a plastic box (at least at most places in Japan) and drilling holes into it. The bottom plates were slightly rusty, though.heli wrote:You mean china, from aliexpress ?RadiantAnsel wrote:I recently snatched a lot of "junk" sticks from Japan

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
Keyboard is definitely preferred. The only problems with keyboards are the ergonomics and key travel time, so a Hitbox-like is probably the best overall controller. I recently started using a K100, which is picture perfect of the kind of thing I'd have filed away as repugnant gaymershit a few years ago, but the very low latency and travel distance really does make a difference. I actually PBed a segment immediately upon trying it out.
It's hilarious to think optimizations like these are wasted on the target audience of people who only use it for CoD or whatever.

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
Xbox 360 controller for FPS.
Sega pad for shmups.
Joycons for Huntdown and other 2-or 4- direction run-and-gun shooters. Since the directional inputs are their own keys and not connected whatsoever, it's much easier to be precise about the inputs. And the joycons are more comfortable to me than a keyboard or hitbox, although the concept is probably similar. Where the joycons fall apart is when I need reliable diagonals.

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
I know a keyboard for many shmups would give super-accurate control. Would be great for super tight navigation through bullet clouds. I just wouldn't be able to handle 8 way movement. I admire anyone who can use one though.
I much prefer an arcade stick now for shmups and a standard 2 stick pad for most other games. I have several different sticks. The Hori EX2 fight sticks I have for 360/PC aren't bad but the buttons are starting to fail on them. I'm on the lookout for a nice PC/360 stick.
Have nice Hori sticks for PS1/2 (a Real Arcade PS and a Hori Mini) and I use the official stick for Dreamcast. Also use the Tatsunoko v Capcom stick for Gamecube/Wii but I had to upgrade the buttons on that as they failed very quickly after a week of playing 1942!!!
Have a JP HS-0136 for my Saturn. Lovely stick. It only has an ASCIIWARE stick in there but it's good enough for me!
Picked up a Hori mini stick for Switch but haven't used that a great deal.

Re: Just curious about your controller of preference
I always play on a stick, unless I'm trying to be quiet, in which case I'll use a Buffalo USB SNES pad or a Dualshock 4. Trying out different sticks and setups (in terms of the lever and microswitch combinations, button choices, etc) constantly threatens to become an appalling addiction for me, so I've been trying to get rid of a load with a view to keeping just one for each system (and even that is hard to justify when you have multi-console PCBs, etc). The sticks I really like using and will probably always keep are as follows:
That looks like a reasonable amount to have, so I'll keep pruning.
The only other thing I use is the Brook PS4>PCE/MD converter, since none of the multi-console PCBs support MD or offer adequate button layout options for PCE.
Spoiler
Sega Virtua Stick High Grade with Brook Universal Fighting Board for modern consoles/PC
Madcatz TE Round 2 with Brook Retro Board (& a bunch of console-specific cables) for almost everything else
Hori Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai for PS4
Mayflash F500 Elite (excellent after the firmware update - don't let people put you off a Mayflash if you can find a cheap one...)
HRAP EX for 360
Madcatz Soul Calibur V 'Soul Edition' stick for 360
Madcatz Tatsunoko vs. Capcom stick for Wii
Hori Real Arcade Pro for PS2/1 (the second model with the non-reflective top panel)
Namco arcade stick for PS1/2
Hori Real Arcade VF for Saturn
Agetec 'Green Goblin' stick for DC (Sanwa- and Seimitsu-modded, as are most of these!)

Previously, Rock Candy X360 controllers, but now, I'm using an Afterglow X360 controller that I got from a thrift store a while back for cheap and its going well being used.
I've Come to Deliver Some Bad Luck!
