Someone recommend me some japanese DS titles!

Post by Arznei »

Alright, I'm considering buying a DS. Am I already doing this right? Hopefully, good. Now, what titles should I pick up?

I'm mainly interested in RPG, platformer, fighting, or music. If there's any japanese RPG's out there with little text, let me know. I can already think of one which I need to get.

You're making the right choice: it's no exaggeration to say that the DS is my favourite games console since the Dreamcast.

Many good DS games are released in PAL and US regions too, so there's no need to get the JP version (unless you want it precisely because it's the JP version, of course, but I'm afraid I can't identify with that ;) ). One game that's definitely worth getting if you're into music games is Ouendan, the upcoming US version of which is more like a semi-sequel with a slightly different style. New Super Mario Bros. is also an absolutely fantastic game, as is Metroid Prime: Hunters. Mario Kart DS is arguably the best of the Mario Kart series, and Wario Ware: Touched! is simply hilarious. If you want a portable shooting game, Nanostray is pretty good (though neither amazing nor awful), and has outstanding graphics and sound if you want a showpiece title ;)

I have Ouendan. I don't want any Wifi-type games because I don't know how to set Wifi up. Plus, my location will make it pretty much impossible to play with others around the world.

Densetsu no Stafy 4! It's the fourth installment (duh) of the great Stafy series of games, which is a Kirby-ish platform game that is just as charming with quite a bit of depth to it. While a great deal of the game takes place underwater (and not really platforming), you'll often have to nagivate obstacles outside the water, which appears more frequently in later stages and bonus levels.

How importable is that? I see a bunch of Kanji on the touchscreen. Anything significant?

If you were referring to Mario Kart and MP: Hunters, they're great as single-player games too. :) But depending where you are in Oz you will find that there are more DS wifi hotspots around than you think. For example, in the UK there is one in every single McDonalds in the country. Oftentimes I go to my local one, order something trivial like a small Coke, connect to the Net via DS wi-fi, and play online Mario Kart and MP:H to my heart's content :D

I only played a couple of stages yet, but it seems just as import-friendly as the previous Stafi games (highly recommended, btw). You're missing out on the story, but it's not important for the gameplay at all.

BTW, I found it quite funny that Stafi appears in Super Princess Peach.

Yeah, and the story is always animated via cutscenes to give you a good idea what's going on without understanding a word of Japanese. The menues are easily trial-and-errored through if you can't read them to navigate, the same as the other games. I'm not into the game enough yet to guarantee that there's no Monster World IV Sphinx level ridden buried in the game, but I'd sincerely doubt it just given the way the games play. At most the game will have you obtain some item in the level, which will be obvious enough but also depicted as an image in the character's word ballon to readily identify who needs what.

Ok, I will definitely check Stafi 4. Funny enough I've played 3 before on a rom.

I am probably going to buy Jump! Superstars too.

Actually, SCREW Jump Superstars. It has the WORST reviews I've EVER seen. Apparently it's only useful if you have a friend with another copy, so you can enjoy a Smash Bros multiplayer game. Totally not worth it.

What else is there? I want Stafi, but what else? There must be more import friendly DS titles than just that one alone.

Very importable. I don't even read the "story"... I just fast forward. There's a handful of parts where you get help, but if you try a few things you'll figure them out.

I might be selling mine for a discount if you're interested. Complete w/ everything, and only used for a short bit.

It's a fighting game. Would you expect anything else? :) I also know Sanji supposedly has quite an advantage over everyone in the game, so I'd be concerned about the balance of the game.

Not really since few games seem to be stranded in Japan, at least good, import friendly stuff. There's Bleach from Treasure, which has gotten a good bit of praise, but then it'd probably suffer the same as Jump Superstars for being a fighting game. Cooking Mama's got a lot of buzz about it on the Internet, and pictures and descriptions make it seem easily playable, but I'd be concerned about not being able to read ingredients. If you already have Ouendan, then you probably also know about Band Brothers (which has an expansion GBA cartridge as well). Seems decent enough, but I don't have it to really say.

Better wait then.

How depressing, I thought there would be more japanese DS titles which are import friendly.
