New Shooters for Old Consoles

Post by o.pwuaioc »

I haven't really kept up with new games for old consoles in a while, but I was wondering if there are any good shooters out for it. My knowledge stops with Neo XYX (and older NGDev games) and Sturmwind and those games, except that I saw Darius Extra was released by Strictly Limited for the Genesis.

Because I haven't kept my eye on the scene, I'm sure I missed some good stuff, that's been released in the last decade. Anything good? ZPF isn't out yet, right?

Not that new anymore, but Blade Buster on NES is really cool.

I am interested in hearing news on ZPF too - I will 100% support this.

ZPF is still happening. Latest update from one of the creators (from February this year).

They're still doing a Kickstarter and they partnered with Mega Cat Studios for physical game production.

GG Aleste 3 is spectacular. It technically doesn't have a cartridge release for Game Gear yet (if ever, only available on GG Micro or on the Aleste collection) so it might not be what you're hoping for, but it's super fun.

Irena Genesis Metal Fury is on it's way and is looking promising.

A new shmup came out on the Atari Jaguar (yes, that's right) last year. It's called Last Strike, and it's like a spiritual successor to Scramble and Super Cobra. It's pretty well-designed, and fun to play. It's also very hard - at least, for me it is, but I'm terrible at the genre.

That's a cool idea, but that first level makes it hard to see what's what.

Speaking of AtariAge, I will plug one that caught my eye lately:

Keep an eye on their page. I think they just closed pre-orders until it's finished / released. It was a Kickstarter project originally.

Will do. How are their other games, do you know? Not a shmup, but I thought Tanzer looked cool. Before now I've never heard of them or these games.

Mega Cat is a publisher, not a developer, so their games come from all kinds of people. They also have an unfortunate habit of not disclosing who the actual dev is on a bunch of their games.

Not a full-on shmup, but The Curse Knight has a Kickstarter now. It's a hybrid action/run & gun game with shmup levels, and will likely be of interest to those following this thread. It's coming for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

I think Sky Raiders for atari lynx came out this year. It looks like it has a lot of inspiration from River Raid, though seems like it has more going on in the graphics and enemies department.

I'd forgotten about this, but there's a really good C64 game made by a Sarah Jane Avory called Zeta Wing. It's heavily inspired by the arcade game Gemini Wing:

It's only 4 bucks currently on Itch.IO, good bargain.

I forgot to mention this one. Sky Raider is pretty sweet if you're a fan of River Raid. It's an unofficial remake, but with bosses added. It saves your progress up to level 21, but beyond that you'll have to start at level 21 each playthrough (or just re-start from level 1 if you like). It's pretty difficult though, because you only have one life and one credit.

Looks like it has elements from the Atari 800 port too. Looks like fun. Ordered!

She has done multiple games that are all high quality, and I believe more than 1 shooter as well. Well worth a look.
