RQ: Toaplan mascot in Zero Wing (AC)
The recent activity on the Zero Wing board reminded me of something. In level four, there are several hidden Toaplan mascots. If you don't kill them, you can collect them with the tractor beam. Is Pipiru just an easter egg, or does he have some special function (for extra points or whatnot)?
You can find him:

2) To the left of the red ship. pic
3) Just past the second "BH99." pic
4) Above the long horizontal pole. pic
5) In the water shortly after the boss detaches. pic

Each mascot is worth 10,000 points if you grab them. You only get 100 points if you shoot them. I tried finishing the stage while holding one of them but nothing happens.
Also, if you hold UP when you finish stage 4, you get this:

I can't believe I never noticed that 10k bonus. Probably because there's no audio cue when the points are added.

The pics don't work anymore. Has someone another source? Haven't seen any of them while playing normally.
Re: RQ: Toaplan mascot in Zero Wing (AC)
I found all of them and took some new pictures. Pics are of MD version since I can actually pause that version to take pictures, but it's the same in the arcade. It seems that holding up when the stage ends makes the Thank You! message appear only on the arcade version, not on Mega Drive. The locations at the top of the screen are obscured by plants in the foreground of the arcade so it might be hard to see in that version, but the plants are part of the background on the Mega Drive, so it's actually easier to see the locations there anyway. Pipiru is invisible, so you won't actually see him until you tractor beam him, but you can still shoot him and he'll explode.

Why is there a ukranian flag in a post of Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:21 pm?

Sure. I actually have recordings that I did of every location on MAME the other day, but I seem to be unable to edit them together with Windows Video Editor because it refuses to open the files for some reason. I will likely just try again with a save state before the beginning of the level so I can just do everything in one go without having to do any editing and just reload the save state if I mess up.Angry Hina wrote:Thanks for posting these.

Getting the final one in the water without being killed by the boss is actually pretty difficult. I've never managed to do it without dying. You also pretty much can't fire the green homing weapon at all if a Pipiru is on screen without killing him, so you basically have to either switch to another weapon or play basically the entire stage with nothing but the tractor beam if you want to find all 5 locations. You'll get way more points from Pipiru than from the enemies, though, and if you are lucky enough to get a 10up in advance, you can milk that stage for points from Pipiru since the only checkpoint the stage has lets you get 4 of the 5.

It looks like Imageshack set it up so anyone trying to embed an image that no longer exists on their platform gets that image instead.

I remembered the game has an invulnerability DIP switch, so I used that to record it on MAME for great justice. I typically get killed trying to get the last one without it, so I usually don't even bother.
