Idea for new voting thread: best Shmups as of 2010 (or so)

Post by LenDar »

So that idea might sound awkward and weird, but I wonder if there's some way for shmuppers to shout-out their favorite more modern shmups that don't stand an actual chance of making the top 25 shmups of all time.

(Or maybe someone can inform me that someone else is way ahead of me here, just as good).

To me, personally, that's partly because of a couple of aspects of more modern shmups that I think are compelling. First of all, it seems to me that modern indie shmups are free to shed some of the motivations behind design choices related to arcade roots, like either an incredibly hard default difficulty, or (whether it has that or not) a really extreme difficulty incline, like the well-known trend for Cave shmups (and probably most others) where stages 1 and 2 can be beaten with reflexes alone but for 3-5 you can forget it; i.e. I hope you brought a bag full of quarters. Along the same lines, I like design like is seen in Raging Blasters where you can even get cues for how some threats will enter the area (or just how certain things are about to move) that you couldn't otherwise possibly see coming and would have to learn from trial and error.

There's that, and I love analog control in some of them even though I know why a lot of people don't (I think the benefits of 8-way could be retained, conceivably, with gates having more angles).

Then there are also things like growth/upgrade systems like in Caladrius Blaze or Ginga Force.

I mean if people insist that the older ones are just altogether better in any case, then that's their thing. Either way, I think the genre has actually gone places over the years, which was one of the many things that I enjoyed finding out about it since I got on my recent shmup stint -- despite the genre not being mainstream. Bullet Heaven occasionally does their top ten of the year, which is pretty much the closest thing of a reflection on the more recent shmups I can think of.

Couldn't we just add a release date filter to the existing list? Not sure I see value in running a separate poll with arbitrary restrictions.
Formerly known as 8 1/2. I return on my second credit!

Almost no modern shmups ever make the list, if you're talking about the annual voting.

Have you looked at the full list (not just the top 25 and hm)? There are tons. Hell, Sisters Royale is #70 and it's two years old!

I took a second look at the results topic and now I see the "full list" link that I missed before:

Thanks. I missed it.
