The lack of auto-scrolling will the be the main point of contention. For me, like Outzone, yes, it's a shmup for lack of a better term.

It is for me.
Side scrolling push scroll games are still shmups in my eyes if the the character is not affected by gravity.

It fits the genre i like to play good enough, like contra is also a shmup,
if you dont agree, because it is a run and gun, this one is a dive and torpedo.

If Out Zone qualifies, Kiki Kaikai and the likes do as well. Boring discussion.
Re: In the Hunt...it's a shmup....right?
I don't think anyone seriously questions In The Hunt's status as a shmup.
It may not be autoscrolling, but if autoscrolling is the ultimate criteria, all the belt shooters like Fantasy Zone and newer where you can choose to turn around would be out. And they aren't.

Imagine a world where Defender is not a shmup.
Re: In the Hunt...it's a shmup....right?
It is a shmup in every way except for having automatic scrolling.

He's done this for all his shmup episodes, i remember a castlevania one too in the off topic section.Koa Zo wrote:Damn, dude's click bait was well targeted!
Thing is, I think his content is nice and definitely belongs here, I just wish the threads were more honest, ie "VGE Episode whatever - In The Hunt".
Not sure why he thinks hiding that it's his videos helps. Especially since anyone who's seen one will know what the threads are as soon as they see the username afterwards.
At first I was annoyed, but the videos were nice enough for it to fade away. Now I'm just confused. Is there some stigma against youtubers here? Because I've never seen it.
Re: In the Hunt...it's a shmup....right?
Since the forum has pretty low activity I think these threads are ok. They might trigger a discussion or at least direct viewers to solid Youtube content. Generally, the forum needs more activity not less. I just wish he at least put the effort to write a few sentences and add some substance to the forum itself. If the OP doesn't bother to write anything at at all, why should anyone else?
In this example, just briefly summarize why/why not in the hunt is a shmup to get the discussion started, or just summarize your thoughts on the game adding a sincere question or so. and then append the youtube link after those couple of sentences. it's a 5 min effort and would prevent the derailing of these threads or people perceiving it as click bait or shilling.
Just adding your own youtube link thousands of times without really engaging with the forum comes off as either asocial (which I think is okay, as this place should be quite open to asocial individuals) or, in the worst case, disrespectful ("go to my link, like and subscribe, bye").

Right, I agree. The thing is he drops these threads in multiple forums and then disappears. He almost never actually participates. Just click bait and later! Disingenuous and lame approach imo.PerishedFraud ឵឵ wrote:He's done this for all his shmup episodes, i remember a castlevania one too in the off topic section.Koa Zo wrote:Damn, dude's click bait was well targeted!

Re: In the Hunt...it's a shmup....right?
This guy dumping his shmup videos here still provides more shmup talk on the forum than most other people do, and the videos themselves are generally pretty good for what they are.
I gave up on In The Hunt years ago, couldn't cope with the slow pace, but it's never a bad time to bring it up.

Re: In the Hunt...it's a shmup....right?
This game absolutely destroyed me when I bought it on Arcade Archives a few months ago and credit fed through it. Did my first DoDonPachi credit feed (loop 1 only, of course) on MiSTer on the same day. DDP took me 8 credits on my first attempt, but In the Hunt took 24. I knew it was going to be hard because Irem, but I wasn't expecting it to be that difficult. Really cool game, though. I hope to not be garbage at it some day.

Careful what you wish for! What if he posted as much as me?Koa Zo wrote:Right, I agree. The thing is he drops these threads in multiple forums and then disappears. He almost never actually participates. Just click bait and later! Disingenuous and lame approach imo.
