Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Post by strygo »

I was hoping the Final Fantasy pixel remasters were supported on the Nvidia Shield TV Pro. Unfortunately, they are touch only, so they aren’t usable with a controller on this device.

But I’m still left wondering: is this device good for anything? Are there any other Android games (especially those made by traditional game makers) that make this device worth having?

Geforce now would be my main usecase.

Is it the 2019 model? It's considered one of the best media boxes, for things like Plex or streaming services, IIRC. 4K60 and Dolby Vision and all that jazz.

I use mine as a media box; it works really well for that application.

Additionally, I have a Linux workstation with dual GPUs. One of them is a 3080Ti that gets passed through to a gaming Windows virtual machine using VFIO, and I can then access that VM either through Looking Glass on my Linux desktop for desk-based keyboard/mouse gaming or move to my living room and stream to the Nvidia Shield TV using Nvidia GameStream for couch-based controller gaming.

I’ve been a longtime customer of Apple TVs and I’ve generally been happy with them for streaming purposes. I more recently got a Synology NAS and the apps available on the Apple TV for it are decent.

From a gaming perspective, the Apple TV is a disappointment. Very few iOS games are ported to the form factor, and those that are either don’t run very well or have compatibility issues over time. I’d much prefer if publishers like Nintendo and Square published more of their mobile games with Apple TV support.

This functionality is what would interest me in Android TV devices like the Nvidia. But it seems to be niche, since publishers don’t prioritize this.

Same here. I don't do any gaming on it, but I am happy with it as a media streaming box.
