Fried N64 Troubleshooting

Post by RedDeLidder »

I recently picked up a botched NUS-CPU-03 N64 RGB install after the previous installer apparently fried the board, the N64 itself when I received it wouldn’t display any audio or video, but would exhibit an initial flicker on my test monitor.

They removed C22, R1, R14 and Q1, R16, R15 and C109

As far as I know Q1 and R16, R15 and C109 are comprising the C-Sync circuit so would these contribute to the console itself not being able to initialize the cartridge?

Before anyone asks, RAM is placed and installed and the console powers on and all cartridges and cartridge slots are clean, so all the typical bases are covered.

Any idea of where I can find part numbers for replacing these removed items? Any idea if these missing items would contribute to a unresponsive N64? Any other tests I can do to narrow down the problem?

I know nothing about N64's but like with most consoles, getting this sort of info is hard as service manuals & the like aren't available.

One option is to obtain a good working console, then you can measure the components you need & replace them. Alternatively, get yourself a donor N64 (preferably with a different problem) & transfer the missing components.

The only N64 console I have on hand is a different revision and a completely different board layout.

Luckily, I found someone who took apart CPU-03 and CPU-04 N64s and did measurements on all components of the board. After having replaced all missing components, it seems to still be posing the same problem. I'm going to need to start taking measurements myself to see if some of components of the board have failed. I assume the botched RGB install may have shorted something on the board, so I just need to work backwards from there.
