Weird issues with UltraHDMI to a DVI 1600x1200 LCD ...

Post by swcdx »

Hello,

I have a UltraHDMI that is working just fine connected to a modern HDMI display with a HDMI cable.

However, when I change the cable to a HDMI <--> DVI cable and connect it to a NEC display that is 4:3 and has 1600x1200 physical resolution, I get no signal and the NEC display complains that the signal is out of range.

Is this expected ? The UltraHDMI is set to 1080p when I see the config on-screen using the modern HDMI display. I tried setting it to 1200p (4:3) and then moving it over to the NEC display but still got nothing. When I moved it back the setting was back to 1080p ... maybe it auto-senses ?

Comments ?

Thank you.

Which NEC 4:3? Have you checked which flavor of DVI it uses? Then checked your cable is the same and compatible? Some DVI is analog only, others digital only, DVD-I is the one that had both I believe...

It is an NEC 2190uxp ... it has *two* DVI inputs and I think one is DVI-I and one is DVI-D ...

OK, I will try connecting it to the other DVI input - I don't know which is which ... stand by ...

OK, I tried it again and *neither* the DVI-D nor DVI-I inputs will display anything from the UltraHDMI.

I know the UltraHDMI works and I know the console works and I know the two DVI inputs on the monitor work.

In fact, I also have a n64digital with HDMI out and the monitor cannot display that either.

Just keeps saying "out of range".

I think this is classic EDID incompatibility and an EDID emulator will fix. Extron products tend to include them and this UltraHDMI thread has buy links to multiple emulator devices.

DVI-D, HDMI that copied it and DisplayPort that came later, use a 2 way communication protocol called EDID. The display tells the signal generator what its native resolution is and what resolutions it can support and the video player, computer, etc. can then generate video that is supported. You'd be surprised how many versions of EDID there are and they are not all compatible. I think your NEC uses an older version than what UltraHDMI is outputting with expected target of modern television. You could ask mod team to support older EDID standards but good luck.

Still worth testing your HDMI to DVI cable on a modern computer monitor but I seriously doubt there is a problem with a passive cable as DVI-D and early HDMI versions are the same video format arranged over different pins.

I don't understand the reason for digital video N64 mods to begin with but that's okay.

First of all, thank you - appreciated.

Yes, the setup works just fine with modern HDMI monitors. It's just the old 1600x1200 NEC displays that have a problem.

Because I am curious ...

Is this something that the UltraHDMI firmware could fix ? That is, could EDID compatibility issues be solved by a more sophisticated UltraHDMI firmware ?

In absence of that, I will get a "EDID injector" - would this one work:

https://www.extron.com/product/edid101h4k

EDIT: hmm ... I think the extron device (EDID 101H 4K) will NOT work ... the device has a list of output resolutions that are all 16:9 aspect ratio so I am not sure how that would work when I am passing through 1600x1200 (4:3) which is not in the list of configurable resolutions ...

Sorry - I am still not fully understanding this.

First, is it my UltraHDMI that is NOT sending something to my monitor, OR is it my monitor that is NOT sending something to the UltraHDMI ?

I think it is the latter - the older NEC monitor is not sending something nice back to the UltraHDMI.

But that doesn't make any sense because the UltraHDMI has explicit resolution settings that you can configure in it - so why does it care what my monitor does or doesn't say to it ?

If I tell the UltraHDMI to be 1600x1200 that's it ... end of story.

I don't care what you do or do not see from the monitor. Do the thing I tell you to do and shut up about it.

Right ?

EDID is data sent from the display to the video source. There is a good writeup here (note the graphic at the page top): https://www.black-box.de/en-de/page/258 ... -Emulation

Anyhow, there is some information in another Shmups thread that might shed light on your problem:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=62245

Also...I looked up the information for the NEC monitor you're trying to use. 8ms gtg response time, a full frame to do a white/black transition...1000:1 contrast ratio at least, but still, Argh.
