In that case, I'll do a write-in vote for Action 52's Star Evil. You know a game is hardcore when it kills you less than 1 second after starting it unless you immediately use your extreme skills to stay alive.

In Strike Force Hydra your ship can jump. I'd argue that it gives the game one of the most flexible controls ever seen in an STG, as you can simply jump over any difficult pattern.

When we were kids my cousin was blasting Xenon 2's bangin OST really loud so his mom wouldn't hear his mate bumming him while I recorded it all on hidden cam, so that's my vote for sure. I later blackmailed him with the tape, inadvertently causing the collapse of his twenty-year marriage and eventual suicide after I accidentally hit Send instead of Delete once he'd paid up.

I'm going to hell because of Xenon 2, it doesn't get more hardcore than that! 3;

Fun tidbit: Real eagle-eye fans of the film will notice a fun easter egg. The pastor/cousin also happens to have a Nomad with Divine Sealing in the booth near a stack of communion wafers. ^_~

Instead of D-Forces you should include D-Stars, a truly wretched, uh I mean based, doujin shooter with an op bullet-eating force shield that nullifies all challenge in the game, unless you are a certain type of person. It was recently shown off at a shmups event by a guy who, despite these advantages, sadly didn't realize that if a thousand aimed bullets are slowly moving towards you, you should probably move out of the way, or just move in general.

As it stands I had to vote Hong Kong 97 for its realism.
