Super R-Type - Rayzanber II - Aldynes review scores

I wish I had the entire magazine, It's basically the same people that worked on EGM.

Edit: this issue is now scanned and online

I bought Super R-Type back in the day, enjoying it, even with all the slowdown.

Rayzanber II was a game I would probably not have bought, but Aldynes, I would have for sure, had I owned a SG in 1991. I didn't, but had one briefly in the late 90s.

After playing Aldynes in emulators, I can say for the gameplay, it is worth it. It's really fun. If there were only 2-3 more stages and more color, it would've been near perfect.
Nice parallax for sure.

I bought a SuperGrafx console with rgb mod -- it's gotten quite pricey nowadays but worth it in the end if you want/collect PC Engine hardware. Too bad the full potential of the SGX wasn't realized with NEC & Hudson Soft.

Played it in the early 90s and never minded the slowdown much. The fact that there are no checkpoints though sucks all the fun out of the game for me. :?

Thinking back on it, yeah you're right about the checkpoints sucking all the fun out that game.

How in hell did they neglect to put them in I wonder. It was one of the earliest games for the system - why would anybody want to buy a needlessly hard shooter as one of their first games?

Really though, my motivation for making this thread wasn't about Super R-Type, it was because that scan has the only english print review of SuperGrafx Aldynes that I know of :D

Yep, the EGM editorial staff were always reviewing the latest Japanese gaming imports for PCE, MD, SFC, etc. It was quite expensive to get game imports (unless you checked out the indy gaming shops like the Mikado toy store or Arco International in San Francisco, CA in the early to mid 1990s). It was cool to check out the Japanese gaming magazines at the Kinokuniya bookstore in Japantown, San Franncisco back in the early 1990s. Heck, it was cool to gloss over those slick full color NEC PCE hardware & gaming ads in the Young Jump! (and others like it) manga during the early 1990s as well.

Aldynes is a pretty decent game with some really great music and some tasty parallax scrolling in stage 3. Never did figure out how to kill that final boss, though. Tried to point-blank it but ended up smashing into it and dying. Gave up after like 40 minutes of attempting it since you have unlimited continues. Maybe some day I'll try it again.

Super R Type with the SA 1 hack is superb, even only Irem could of played nice and giving some restart points.

Could you rephrase the secodn part of your sentence... because I'd be dying to play the shit out of this game with checkpoints...

I'd heard some of the magazines were irrationally hostile to CD games, expecting that the change in media ought to revolutionize the design of the games themselves. You can really see that with the Rayxanber 2 reviews: "I don't understand why this has to be a CD game, other than the outstanding music." Think you might have just figured it out, genius.

For those of you who were paying closer attention at the time: was this just a byproduct of marketing teams inflating expectations - gilding the medium with the promise of UNLIMITED STORAGE?

Yes, in the early 90's CD-ROM tech was marketed heavily as a total game-changer in terms of graphical fidelity. I think it's fair to say that public perception was that the format itself held some magic beyond just expanded storage capacity. To be fair, this was at a time when things like the Super FX chip could fundamentally alter the power of a console, so there was some expectation that a CD drive could do the same.

I got a Sega CD for my birthday sometime around 1992 and can remember all the parents wanting to have a look at this new marvel of technology. We sat and played Ground Zero Texas for about an hour before realizing we had been had.
Formerly known as 8 1/2. I return on my second credit!

In my quest to find any and all magazine coverage of Aldynes for the SuperGrafx, I've come up with this.

Letters to the Editor segment from EGM #23 June 1991
Image

Joystick magazine April 1991
Image

Tilt magazine, May 1991

DieHard GameFan magazine Vol. 1 issue 3, January 1993
