Help With PC Shmups

Post by D_Davis »

Hello, I am a long time shmupper, and a new reader/poster on this board.

Anyhow, I have been wanting to get into PC based Shmups for some time now, but because I do not read Japanese, I can never find the proper links to purchase games such as PERFECT CHERRY BLOSSOM and other Toho Project games. I would love to be able to buy these games. Does anyone know if they offer a download/purchase option anywhere, and will these games run on a US PC?

I have looked at shootthecore.com, and although they have a ton of great info, often times I end up chasing links through Japanese sites, or I can only find the demo.

I am not asking for a place to "pirate" these games, I would like to purchase them.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, and I thank you all for your time.

If this post is in the wrong section, or has been answered already, I apologize in advance!

Yes, they will run on a US PC. If you have troubles, you can always change your regional settings. As for where to find them, I suppose Palet Web...or whatever it's called.

As mentioned, www.paletweb.com and www.himeyashop.com are the places where most people here go to purchase doujin stuff...both, to the best of my knowledge, are reliable, though the latter tends to be more expensive.

Thank you - are these sites for purchasing a physical product that is shipped, or are they pay to download?

Does anyone know of or have a "best of" list? Scouring the games on shootthecore reveals a crap load of game, and as we all know, many shmups may look the same, but the devil's in the details!

You buy the actual CD which they ship to you.

Well, ShootTheCore has a "must have" medal displayed next to some of postman's favorites, so that might be a place to start, but really, everyone's tastes are different, so you might as well get started trying those demos out. ;)

in the case of Embodiment of Scarlet Devils, this isn´t enough. The game uses jp. filenames which, although displayed properly within Windows Explorer, aren´t recognized by western Windows versions. There is a hack availlable for this, using a hex-editing program you can patch the .exe file, renaming all the jp. dat-files in it, and renaming them accordingly within Windows Explorer. After doing that, the game will work.

That's odd, changing the region stuff was enough to make my copy of EoSD work...actually, PCB and IN (which I got at the same time) worked even without changing the settings (though a few minor things were off...no wav music option for example), EoSD was the only one which really "needed" it...

well, I´m not the only one who had the described problems, but you´re not the only one who didn´t have them, so I guess there´s maybe two versions of this game around. I have a rather old product, something like 4 years old.

For your money, I would suggest Hitogata Happa. It is, by far, the best buy concerning PC doujin shooters. Platine Dispositif is quickly becoming one of my favorite companies.

Sometimes it's kinda random if EoSD works or not but Microsoft Applocale should help (at least for winXP).
And if that doesn't work the forums at http://www.shrinemaiden.com/ might help. Like
here for the EoSD problem or here for the PCB patching issue.

If you like Hori shmups you could also look at Tobi Tsukihime it's a neat hori doujin shmup.

I think that whether you have Win 98 or XP is going to make a big difference. I'm still running Win 98 (for compatibility with older games--I use Linux most of the time) and I can never be sure if anything Japanese will run. Though I was able to run the translated Perfect Cherry Blossom demo.

Try before you buy. Some freeware, some demos, lots of good stuff.
