Your Favorite arcade style games

Post by Eyvah_Ehyeh »

Yes, even more top lists! :D Here we make a list of our favorite “arcade style games”, meaning the games that you played for highscore, be it for points, or time, and have enjoyed the most. I do not include games that I love and that provide a similar experience to "arcade games"; roguelikes such as Hades; action games such as Devil May Cry and Hotline Miami; run n guns such as Contra and Pocky & Rocky; beat em ups such as Super Double Dragon, Final Fight (SNES), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time. These are all awesome games that gets my adrenaline pumping, but that I've never really played for highscore, or don't even have a score to begin with (but can be played for time, of course). What matters is your own approach - if you’ve played a game in the spirit of arcade gaming, then you can include it in your list.

Here is my own TOP 10:

Amplitude/Frequency
Dance Dance Revolution (several)
Elasto Mania
Jezzball/Maxwell's Maniac
Pooyan
Pop n’ Music (several)
Rescue The Beagles
Super Mario Kart
Tontie
Torus Trooper

Some music games (bemanis and Amplitude and Frequency), an old arcade classics (Pooyan), two racers (Elasto Mania and Super Mario Kart), and a couple of lesser well-known games for PC, such as whack-a-mole flash game Tontie, shmup maker Kenta Chos Torus Trooper, just in general awesome game Rescue The Beagles, and the only game(s) I've ever competed for highscore with my grandpa - Jezzball and Maxwell's Maniac. :)

I think this can get a bit nebulous. If someone really wanted to split hairs, almost anything can be treated as "arcade". I'll keep it to things that actually have a standard timer/score counter and are played level to level.

Sonic Mania
Spark the Electric Jester 2 (soon to be 3)
F-Zero GX
Lumines
Blue Revolver

I think it can be ambiguous even if you only include games that do have a score counter and are played level to level - I mean Super Mario Bros has both, so arguably it's an "arcade type" game, but I've never played it for highscore, only completion, and therefore I wouldn't include it in my own list, even if it would be hard for me to argue against it if someone else wanted to include it in their own list. I also didn't include shmups because I have my own list for just shmups, but if someone else wants to include shmups in their list, that's fine. :)

Spartan X
Food Fight
2084
Discs of Tron
And I'll never pass up an opportunity to body people in Super Turbo.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Never heard of your games, but Disc of Tron reminds me of the super fun times at a LAN back in the day when playing a counter-strike mod called "Ricochet".

Always liked Namco's arcade style approach in racing and combat flights, like Ridge Racer and Ace Combat games.

If you mean arcade style games outside of your typical shootemups and fighting games, some that I can think of that I've really enjoyed are:

Space Invaders Extreme (I keep thinking this would be the perfect pub game, simple to play but it looks flashy and modern, and you have these little roulette mini games every so often when you hit the ufos)

Demon's Tilt (just got this recently, awesome pinball game, looks great in tate as well)

Nex Machina

Tetris Effect

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Future Tone (wrote this off for a while as not being my style of game, but it's a lot of fun!)

Athlete Kings/DecAthlete was a cool button mashing sports game for the Saturn

Virtual On

Katamari Damacy is a weird one but it does kinda fit the arcade genre I think....

also can't forget good old Outrun :D

I loved Katamari, even if I never played it for highscore myself, rather just for the novelty of it. And the MUSIC, of course, which I listen to still sometimes. ^^

Daddy Mulk, can I go out and... KILL 2-NIIITE ImageImage

THE NINJA WARRIORS ONCE AGAIN [PS4/NSW]

Do you like brawlers? AND stage-by-stage time attacks?! This game will last you an eternity. Five radically different characters (you could spend all year mastering one, and remain completely in the dark WRT the other four), a high-finesse combo engine with Natsume's godlike iframe sense, and maddeningly volatile AI. That last bit might be a detriment, if not for the exceptionally tactile grappling and extreme mobility. You're hugely at liberty to manhandle enemies into ideal position for a collective battering, tossing out regular screen-levelling bombs, while superjumping/boosting from one end of the screen to the other. So even the most uncooperative wave is ripe for scruffing.

Do you want to get your teeth knocked the fuck out? Image Image

As a pure survival game, just like its SFC predecessor, it's thoroughly enjoyable but a tad overlong - and also lacking that one's relentless 4:3 pressure. As a high-performance time attack piece, though? It's Sega Rally-tier. And hey, even if the woefully random, unhelpful enemies do frustrate you - wouldn't you rather be angry than bored? Image In all seriousness, this is as literal as high-performance grappling gets. Mould the playfield to your liking, then annihilate it.

Get in line bitches (■`w´■)

(a quick system primer, which still lacks Kamaitachi and Raiden because I'm lazy on the former, and never learned the latter - dat rainy day replay value! Image - but it'll get absolute beginners up to speed)

also, the first boss often scurrs newbies, so here's a clue Image)

Top of my head would be the Sin and Punishment games, Alien Soldier and 2 more recent games being Fight N Rage and Streets Of Rage 4. Fight N Rage and SOR 4 are in my eyes, every bit as good as some of the best past beat em ups.

I'm admittedly not too well versed on Beat 'em ups, but within playing just a few minutes of Streets of Rage 4 and I instantly knew it was the best game in the series. That game is just about perfect.

Have you played the complete version of it? It comes with extra characters, a bosh rush and a couple more things. Also check out Figh N Rage if you can. It's got the best combat mechanics/gameplay of any similar game I've played.
