Do you play on easy and/or credit feed?
Kind of a dumb question I know, but some people here obess about how godly their shmupping skills are. Now, I'm not bashing those players because it is really impressive to see them 1CC a shmup on hard. But, what about those who play these games for fun?
I wasn't born with a drop of japanese blood, so I may never develop the fast reflexes to survive the last few stages on Normal Difficulty. Now, I like playing on one credit just to see how far I go, but I also like to credit feed and play on easy, just to experence the stages. I've recently bought Gradius V (good game, by the way), and while I'm trying to 1CC the game on Very Easy, I'll credit feed it if I start sucking to unlock Weapon Edit Mode. Then, I'll try pwning it on Normal and higher. Besides, the game doesn't wipe out your high score if you continue, it'll wipe out your score, but not your current high score. Sorry if I confused you.
Sometimes, I don't feel like a challenge, I just feel like blasting stuff. Games don't have to be ass-raping hard to be fun.

Its a weird cycle for me. If I play just for fun, I start loosing interest as I realize I'm not getting any better in the game (sometimes getting worse). So then I start getting serious about practicing, and learning the game. After I see myself getting better, I start getting lazy and just want to play for fun again.
Bottom line is you can't EXPECT to get better without playing seriously at some point.
[edit] I took the "fun" part to mean serious about playing. Of course I too wouldn't be bothering with these games if I didn't get some enjoyment/fun out of it. [/edit]

Hey, I aim for the 1CC whenever possible, but some games get insanely difficult near the end; like after some point the machine goes, "okay, you've had your fill unless you stuff me with more quarters!" and the game turns into a quarter muncher.Triple Lei wrote:Wha?That sounds like "aiming for the 1CC" and "playing for fun" are mutually exclusiveban plz lol
I mean, we all sorta play for fun, right?
Since Gradius V is nice enough to keep your high score after you continue (your current score is wiped, but it keeps your current high), I think it's okay to continue on and try to finish the game with whatever credits I have left.
Maybe I should renamed this topic to "Do you play on easy and/or credit feed?"

I used to play like six shmups in a row for ten minutes each some time ago (the fruits of emulation!), but now I found that dedicating myself to DoDonpachi (and ESPRaDe to some extend) is a LOT more fun for me.
Don´t forget that the challenge is the thing that separates games from toys. A game reacts on what you do and rewards you if you did better than last time, whereas a toy just does "diblydoo" or whatever toys do.
I like how DDP demands my concentration, how I have to learn to overcome certain obstacles, and have to switch Ship types because I changed my strategy. I use savestates for every level and every boss up to level four at this time, and can`t really decide between A-Laser or C-Shot.
The point is, I don`t compare my scores to anyone else ones, but use them just as an indicator of how I improve. This game is so hard I will not 1cc it in the near future, but the feeling of improving bullet dodging and outrunning, of seeing threatening situations and finding the best strategy to overcome them is unmatched.
Just playing "for fun", which means without any goal or meaning has become unattractive for me... creditfeeding doesn`t show you shit about the substance, the feeling, the rhytm of certain games. For instance, when I switch to ESPRaDe after some days playing DDP, I notice how different those games handle.
"For fun" means "in order to kill some time". Many modern games are nothing more than time-eaters, this is why games are measured in "10 to 15 hours to complete" or something like this. Games aren`t movies, or they shouldn`t be in my opinion. So, when do you "finish" DDP or Silvergun or Garegga or Raiden? Never, because you can always improve. But the WILL to improve, to conquer, is something that`s deep inside the human nature.
As for Gradius V, believe me, the game gets way more exciting on higher difficulty settings. Maybe it`s not a good game to 1cc since it loops and is exceptionally long (but great nevertheless).
If there is one genre in videogames today that still carry the immense satisfaction of getting better over time, it`s shooters.
Don`t think to much of goals, but enjoy the progress. That`s the sweetest thing in shmups for me. Don´t try to be as good as this or that guy, but try to be the best YOU that you can be. I know this sounds a bit cheesy, but it`s true!

naah....It would devalue the whole gameplay experience. I like the idea of earning my way through a game. If that means playing the first stage many times before I can get through it, then so be it. When I get tired, I turn it off and go do something else. I like the idea of being able to come back to a game whenever I need to blow off some stress or practice. Credit feeding is like admiting defeat IMO...

It depends on how you derive your fun. I'm with sven666 on this one.
Credit feeding is ok though, if you want to learn later patterns.
The point is, if I'm not challenged I lose all interest.
By the way sven, its 'your day' tomorrow 6/6/06. The new Omen will be released and the Antichrist will destroy Mankind.

sometimes i credit feed, most of the time i don't. just picked up gigawing generations the other day and i credit fed through the first three stages and when i died on the third stage i stopped. i then played on one credit for a while until i unlocked the third stage in practise mode. i may credit feed to the end in a few days for a blast but at the end of the day it's just a game. i'm not sure whether i like it enough to go for a 1cc yet and seems like a great little pick up and play shmup for blowing off steam and mild score improvement.
i only play fire shark on one credit though as it suits the game better. i can 1cc it and i'm going for a second loop completion and mmaybe a 1 life so using more that 1 cred is counter productive to my aim.
i finally picked up XII STAG today and i'll probably credit feed it a bit to see what i've bought, and then maybe play on one cred. see what i feel like.
the moral of the story is... it depends and who really cares too much. i mean hell they're computer games for christsakes. just life sapping expensive ones that take up most of my time

I sometimes credit feed or turn the difficulty down in order to either practice in preparation for the defaults or to get an idea of what lies ahead...I see no problem with doing so as long as you don't brag about "beating" a game when you do it, or try to submit a high score not played on one-credit defaults.
Some people prefer to play on one-credit defaults all the time, and that's fine, but a few of them get indignant whenever they catch wind of anyone practicing with a different method than theirs, and that irks me...not everyone gets to the same point via the same path, and all that.

Well, maybe I sounded a bit too puristic about that stuff... While I never credit-feed since some time now, I sometimes mess around with the MAME cheat file - this was the only way I was ever able to see the second loop in DDP (Note to myself: Mamma mia).
I guess making level-select savestates in MAME in a arcade game is debateable too.

its actually a holiday here in sweden, how bout that!! (its the swedish national day, just a coincidence ofcourse
and ontopic: i have a friend who just credit feeds thru every shooter because "its fun".
then he wont play them again because hes cleared it already and all the "fun" is out of it, needles to say he thinks im crazy with my purist 1ccing.
he has no skills, he destroys the fun out of every shmup in <30 mins, and he thinks im crazy playing shooters because theyre so easy.
THAT gets on my nerves and if that makes me an elitist asshole then so be it

A game has to fun for me to want to spend the time learning it and going for the 1CC + a high score. But I do not play such games 'for fun'. Going for a high score is playing for the thrill of it. I get such a rush when I 1CC a game and/or get a new high score. I think it's this rush that drives serious shmup players, just like surfers get a rush from catching a big wave, or a baseball player gets a rush from crushing a homerun.

This is what this one philosopher calls "being in the flow". This is a very rewarding experience indeed. "For fun" sounds a bit like "not really caring". It`s how we define doing something "for fun".twe wrote: I think it's this rush that drives serious shmup players, just like surfers get a rush from catching a big wave, or a baseball player gets a rush from crushing a homerun.

Why is it that I always open a hornet's nest around here when I make a topic.
I asked this because I was going to credit feed my way through Gradius V so I can get Weapon Edit. Even if I play it on very easy, are you guys suggesting that I 1CC it? I still suck at the game at the moment, so I can't even get through the game on 3 credits.
Just like the guy says when you lose your last life in the game: "You need more pratice." I know who he is refering to. Moi

Opening a hornet`s nest... not quite. You made an interesting, controversial topic. Don´t compare yourself with top players that play through Gradius in Loop 25. As I said before, though maybe not clearly enough, Shmups are a great way to challenge yourself, to see progress (and is, by the way, a model of life itself - overcoming obstacles, improving, frustration, stagnation, trial and error, euphoria and such ) - NOT to humiliate yourself.FatCobra wrote:Why is it that I always open a hornet's nest around here when I make a topic.

And 3 credits? This game is FUCKING hard. Take small steps. Play to beat your own score instead for survival; you will get better over time, thats my tip.

most shooters are designed around scoring as high as the player's ability allows (unless of course you're playing something like musha which is one-(credit, life)-clearable on the first or second try) and credit feeding, while being a good way to see later levels and how they tick, isn't going to do much good if you do it just for its sake.
it might be elitist but it's true.
oh, and weapon edit isn't all it's cracked up to be.
edit counter: 9 jesus my head sucks today
