Any other fans of Kyuukyoku Tiger II Plus?

Post by alpha5099 »

Takumi's first game doesn't get much love. I was thinking about the truly fucked up genesis of the game:

• Toaplan releases a bunch of games, including Kyuukyoku Tiger, which set the stage for the manic renaissance of the mid-90s.
• Seibu makes Raiden, a tribute to Toaplan's style of game design, and the game goes on to become even more popular than any of Toaplan's games.
• Toaplan goes under, and Taito, who presumably own the rights to the Kyuukyoku Tiger name, gives the license to a brand new company, Takumi, which might very well be made from ex-Toaplan members.
• The resulting game, Kyuukyuku Tiger II, pays more homage to Raiden than to the original.

So, Kyuukyoku Tiger II is a tribute to a tribute of the original game.

Anyway, I think it's a great game. I especially love the second player green weapon, the magnetically charged rail gun. Admittedly, the Saturn port is a bit sloppy, the load times are a little much. But other than that, I feel like Kyuukyoku Tiger II doesn't get the attention it deserves.

It's ok-ish-ese. I hate the fact that to get your shot to be decent-ly powerful you have to tap the fire button so rapidly. Decent soundtrack, thoe.

Mars Matrix is a hell of a lot better.

I really like the game. I tried to play it when it was released on RAINE and MAME back in the day, but it was too glitchy for me. So I broke down and bought the Saturn port. Worth the money IMO! Definitely comes out on top of the old helicopter shmups...BUT DOES NOT SURPASS ZERO GUNNER 2!

Here's my counter-question: has anyone 1CC'ed it? It gets ridiculously hard to evade the later bullet streams. Damn helicopters.

But at least the game looked pretty nice.

The Saturn port is certainly no Gekirindan. It's not up to Ving's F3 conversions in terms of perfection, but NaxatSoft (or maybe Takumi if they were the programmers of Saturn KT2 as well) truly trumped Virgin. The Binchou laser rocks IMO.

gunbird18- KT2 is now spot-on perfect in MAME with all raster effects and stuff. I dunno about RAINE however since I haven't tried that one in ages.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

I was working on 1CC'ing the NES version of the game. It's different, but equally long and hard. I sort of gave up on it, because it got to be far too much work to play through the long first levels which I already had mastered just to play the later ones, which I didn't.
