Space Manbow for Nintendo DS?

Post by Thunder Force »

Is this for real, or an April Fool's joke?

Image

Apparently Konami's shmup Space Manbow is supposed to be coming out for the Nintendo DS.

The top screen is the game, and the bottom screen is a simulated display of the MSX keyboard with the Space Manbow cartridge inserted.

Apparently you have to buy Konami's upcoming Japanese Goemon GBA and Goemon DS cartridges and link them up together, to unlock this version of Space Manbow for the DS. No confirmation yet about whether this will be the Space Manbow full game, just a mini-game, or a remake with differences/enhancements...

Sooooo they wouldn't be dumb enough to make you tap the keyboard to play the game right? Keep the gimmicks out of this please :) . *-neo

I'd mark it as "joke" for fear that Shatterhand meets our creator before his time when he reads this.

Edit: silly forum member mix-up.

yes yes... keep Space Manbow exclusive to MSX. It's one of those games that makes us, MSXers proud :D

Even more if it needs such a weird procedure to play the game.. it woudln't help the game have more exposure at all.

Now, a Space Manbow 2 would be very welcome :D

Before reading the Goemon DS & GBA part I was actually convince someone had made a MSX emulator for the DS! This should be possible as there apparently is a growing homebrew scene allready... :)

Would be great if true, but I doubt the WHOLE game would be featured (probably just 1 or 2 levels). It would be fantastic though and making both Goemons musthaves.
I hope the part of the use of the touch screen isn't true though... it sounds like it could ruin gameplay of this great game.

Well, I have the GBA one, and if it looks any good I'll buy the DS one... so sometime in June I might have some more news for ya. :D

Am about to purchase both, but just to be sure I need to ask:

Do I need 2 Japanese versions to play the Space Manbow level, or do other combinations work as well?

SPACE MANSBOW 2 PLEASE

I already have the "real thing" and as much as I love to hate the DS I'm not likely to buy this again unless they add something very nice, and not just a highscore list. Which they very possibly will, but anyway.

erm???

what he said I suppose. :?

I also have the original, but since I am interested in the Goemon games (DS one looks awesome) I thought I might just as well try to get this "bonus" to play too.

Original page is not found. And why would a page from 2005 be relevant anyway?

I'd go with "April Fool's" myself, just on the theory that Nintendo has never been keen about hotswaps.

This has kinda been confirmed on this forum...

Did that Space Manbow rumor turn out to be true?

EDIT: word at the GameFAQs forum is that it's just one level.

Can be found in this thread.

So unless Cthulhu is lying (which I doubt), no April Fool here.

*edit* check this trailer from 1:20 on.....

I have both Goemon 1/2 GBA and Goemon DS and I can confirm that Cthulhu is correct. It's a very evil teaser too since the one level in the Space Manbow for Goemon DS seems to have been ported over well with smooth scrolling no stretching of graphics. The game also has a neat version of Quarth that has a cameo of the Gradius big core as the boss.

Thanks for clearing that up! :)

Do you have the JP versions of both or a combination of western releases?

JP versions, I don't think either came out in the west. I would recommend the SNES Goemon 1 and SFC Goemon 2 over the GBA Goemon 1/2, though. It's not bad, but the SNES ones are better due to better sound and lack of glitches. Some glitches I have encountered include the occasional garbage on screen (doesn't happen often), some odd slowdown (mostly in Goemon 2), and mini games restarting infinitely in Goemon 2 (worst glitch, and makes getting to the hidden level a pain).

I think I have been deceived by the "Goemon: Mystical Ninja" tags I found.
They made me think there was a US release as well (as I knew there wasn't a Eu one).

Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Is the laguage barrier really a big issue here?

I beat both games in Goemon 1/2 with trial and error and I didn't get stuck too many times. However, there are more sticking points in Goemon DS, including a part where you have to draw Kanji, not only correctly, but in the correct order, though I still managed to beat it with some help from gamefaqs and trial and error. I like Goemon DS quite a bit, but as you can tell from that video, it uses the stylus a bit too much.

The Quarth mini game in Goemon DS doesn't require Goemon 1/2. Some of the extras with Goemon 1/2 GBA in the cart slot with Goemon DS are pretty fun (including a Goemon impact battle with some magazine editor or something), but I don't feel the Goemon 1/2 GBA is worth picking up just for the extras.

Damn, I already feared that this was too good to be true.
I really don't want to get into a gamefaqs guided game experience again, after suffering with Sakura Wars on the DC. :(

I guess you saved me from misspending my money here.

Once again thanks for the info.
I guess have the pleasure of owning Goemon and SManbow for MSX already...

Stumbled across this while looking for information about this particular conversion

The DS port is very much real - here's a recording of it via a Goemon minigame:

I bought a copy of the game when I was last in Japan, with what looks like a pretty complete save file, but the minigame isn't unlocked. Would like to try it some time.

It's real, but it's too bad it's only a single stage. The game also has a version of Quarth that uses both screens and has multiple levels.
