Hidden graphics in DoDonPachi?

Post by Dave_K. »

I was messing around with DDP in Mame, and noticed some extra graphics in the rom that I've never seen before in the game. If you press F4, then right arrow to GFXSET 2, you will see the common "Winners don't use drugs" slogan, which has never been shown in the game. If you page down you will see extra pictures of your ships that are also never shown (or maybe this is an easter egg? or special ending/begining?).

I've attached screenshots of the graphics below. I tried to adjust the color palette (press up/down arrow), and could not get the palette right for the ships graphics.

I thought I had seen the ships picture before, and sure enough, on Bernard's beepreying guide, here it is with the proper palette.

I always wondered where Bernard got that pic! So any clues as to why these graphics are never shown "in game"?

Maybe it's the other way around and Cave decided to use Bernard's graphics, but something went wrong in converting from jpeg to rom, but they noticed it too late, and the factory had already started burning that part of the chip. So to save face they then pretended that those ships are actually a warning, that's where the Dont Do Drugs warning comes in : ...or else All Of The Game Will Look Like This To You When You're High.

dunno :?

Where you high when you wrote this? ;)

@Dave_K.: The way you posted it here the second picture is incomplete; the color-depth is too low. That's why simply adjusting the colors won't work. The rest of the picture-information is stored elsewhere in the rom.

Dave, I'm assuming you're using the international rev. of DDP since in Mame it's used as the parent. This makes sense considering that many games during that period had the "Winners don't use drugs" screen for the American market. Makes me wonder if the JP counterpart does...

That bottom spriteset looks like the vertical giant Bee set sideways to me. Don't know for sure though...I'd love to see someone fully rip the sprites to the bosses. I know someone did Hibachi.

BTW, Hibachi of DDP looks like a TON nicer drawn sprite than Dai Ou Jou's for my two cents.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Well I think DOJ Hibachi is a pre-rendered sprite like everything else ~_~.

Wouldn't the FBI slogan be in a USA version rather than International version? I understand how you can see it in both roms under Mame since the Int. is the parent....but still just very strange to see this half finished stuff still floating around in the rom.

Maybe it's the rom after all, perhaps they borrowed stuff from the US rom to make it work or someone mixed it up or Cave just left it in. Why would they delete it?
Still waiting in anticipation for the outcome of those graphics used on bee-preying

I think every game has some unused graphics, heck GTA SA has that hidden Hot Coffee game in it.
