Looking for an in-line 720p to 4K HDMI-HDMI Upscaler

Post by BubbaMc »

I’ve seen a few of these on the market but I’m after one that does perfect integer scaling 720p to 4K (my LG C1 doesn’t do this natively).

Does anyone have experience with these? Thanks.

Short answer: That doesn't exist. Not with integer scaling.

Other stuff:

First of all, why would someone make one? We are a niche audience. I doubt many people are aching to see the individual "pixels" on their blu-rays.

Extron makes a nice little machine. Not affordable for most users. Not integer scaling, so it isn't what you want. Adds a frame of latency (that's lag). You will need to contact a dealer for a quote. Be ready to spend. May not look better than your display's processing.

As you have discovered, there are plenty of affordable 1080p to 4k scalers, but they have limited use cases for most people. Obviously, they don't handle 720p or do integer scaling. An HDFury scaler chained behind the Retrotink 5x (outputting 1080p) should look pretty good, but I doubt it's better than your display's scaler.

The only affordable 720p to 4k scaler I can think of is the DVDO iScan Micro, but your display almost definitely does a better job than it will. Youll get some ringing. It uses chroma subsampling and it's obvious. It also won't accept the OSSC's odd timings.
We apologise for the inconvenience

Try increasing the sharpness setting on the C1. I haven't tried it with general 720p input, but with 240p-scaled-to-1080p content, increasing the sharpness just makes it look closer and closer to integer scaling to me, though you can't quite max it out as then there's some artifacting. You can crank it surprisingly high without artifacting though.
