Axelay vulcan weapon. It's the best.

Post by dpful »

I really liked the axelay vulcan weapon- I think that was what it was called- It's the one where you hold the button to shoot straight and release for a widening spread. Aiming with that was a rare pleasure. How come no other shmups used that? Anyone know anything comparable?

Iridion II on the GBA has a weapon like that. And yes, it's a neat weapon.

The "Round Vulcan" to be specific. And yeah, it was a pretty neat weapon, I would usually never bother "upgrading" to the Morning Star once I got it (then again, the only thing I'd ever "upgrade" in that game was the main laser). I've never played Iridion, but offhand I can't think of any other weapon much like it in any other shmup I've played.

Well... there's a weapon like that in Batsugun, doesnt? The 1st ship does that, you hold the button for a straight line of shots, you release it and the shots all go spread.

In the shmup I am developing, I also put a weapon like that. It's actually the only weapon your ship has, you hold the button for a straight line of powerful shots, and if you release the button the shots divide in 4 weaker spreaded out shots.

The Round Vulcan works a bit differently...Batsugun's C-Type ship is more along the lines of the DonPachi "tap for shot, hold for laser" weapons. The Round Vulcan has 2 streams of bullets coming from your ship, starting at the back: if you hold the button down, the streams will travel around your ship (one above it, one below it) and after a moment end up at the front, if you keep holding the button down. Release the button, and they'll travel back towards the rear. As such, if you lightly tap the button you can use it as a back shot, hold it for a frontal shot, or tap anywhere in between to nail enemies above or below you. Very versatile.

I love that weapon. It is wonderful to see all those little ships that surround you in the first stage get slaughtered so easily. Unfortunately, MAME and DMC3 have taken up all of my time for video games.

Theres a weapon like this in Ziriax on the Amiga from 1990. Can anyone think of any earlier examples of this type of shot?
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

oh, ok, I remember that weapon indeed.

I wonder how auto-fire players would look at it playing the game for the first time :)

If I'm not mistaken, there is a weapon similiar to the round vulcan in one of the Parodius games. I'm not sure of exact game, but it could have been with Kid Dracula in one of the SNES versions.

Neat weapon.

I Kid Drac was supposed to emulate Axelay in that game. I believe he's in the second SNES Parodius.

I love Axelay and the round vulcan does kick ass, most versatile weapon in the game.

Why yes, that makes sense now that I think about it.

well, the fully powered up red weapon in samesamesame works somewhat like the round vulcan (tapping for frontal, hold down and it goes back and forth and back and forth and back and forth...)

While the vulcan weapon in Axelay is GREAT...I like the needle cracker weapon available later in the game...it is essential on the City Lights stage...the vulcan is certainly useful on side missions for killing cannons located on walls.

Yeah, I also remember this weapon very well. One of my favorite shmup weapons. Always good to see some unique ones, all the spread / laser / homing type weapons get pretty repetitive.
