Help out a Sega MarkIII/MasterSystem newbie :)

Post by RoninBuddha »

i've been a long time sega fan, but i have never took interest in SMS/MIII games,... until now, cuz of emulation, i tried out a few games (Alex stuff), and im surprised...

now, what other SMS/MIII games would you reccomend? what are the "essentials" so to speak, prioritizing on Import stuff (MarkIII)? :?

to be honest, im asking this cuz im "compiling" something for my DC (lol, emulators), and i wanna have a handfull of games to burn...

who knows, if i find some games really great i might acutally hunt down some carts (i have an SMS converter for the Genny, used primarily for Phantasy Star, will MIII carts work as well?),..

thanks in advance...

PS - of course, shmups are very welcome,.. :D

The best shooters on the MarkIII/SMS are R-Type, Aleste, and Power Strike II (this one was released on the SMS only).

No shoot'em up but a great Master System title is Zillion. Kinda the Sega counterpart to Nintendo's Metroid. Hell I wish they'd make a new Zillion game if I think about it...

Another good games beside the ones already mentioned are...

Penguin Land, Hang-On, Space Harrier, Teddy Boy, Ghost House, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Sonic the Hedgehog (this is no port of the MD version, it is a new game) and the Wonderboy games...

Oh, and Fantasy Zone is a famous shmup for Master System. Though I never tried to play this game any longer.

I hate to be the anal port comparison guy but SMS Teddy boy and Alien Syndrome both sorta sucked. TB has the scoring removed, which may not be an issue, AS I think was slow and generally shitty next to the NES/arcade versions (IIRC). Since you're emulating I'd say put both games on DC NES/MAME emus instead. Both personal favourites though, especially Teddy Boy.

When you get Shinobi and Wonderboy III, you will be happy I replied.
Shinobi is a more serious arcade game
Wonderboy III is a very big adventure type game in a cute world
When you get these, we'll examine what else you should buy.

Bullshit, California Games is awesome and the Master System version is the best one available. Ghostbusters on the SMS also was a pretty good port, is just that the original game isn't all that hot.

Other than that, Herr Schatten's list is pretty good. I'd change the order of a few games there (Psychic World and The Lucky Dime Caper is among the best games on the system IMO, and I think Time Soldier is also awesome), but all in all is a pretty solid list.

You could add E-Swat , which is very fun on the SMS imo.
Tennis Ace looked like crap, but it was fun to play sometimes.
GP Rider is a very solid racing game with 2 players mode
Tazmania is a very solid platform game
Air-Rescue is a very good choplifter spin-off.
And while at it, Choplifter isn't all that bad either
Asterix is another good platform game on the system
Land of Illusion is a sort of sequel to Castle of Illusion. Not as good, but pretty good nonetheless.

The point I am trying to make is taht people come with 30+ games lists.
Is it so hard to give this guy just a few names of best games, he is not interested in what game is a port or what game is western at all.
I said and I'm sticking with it:
Shinobi and Wonderboy III

Shmups-

R-Type- A very well done port of the classic game. Quite a bit of flicker in spots, but it's still quality stuff. It's even got a hidden stage that the arcade version doesn't.

Sagaia- Basically, this is Darius II. It's been scaled back a bit, as its level count has been cut roughly in half. However, it's surprisingly close to the MegaDrive version, right down to the wavering fire background on Zone A. It also retained three of the arcade version's endings. Toned down, but worth while.

Power Strike- A Compile shmup that's a good challenge. It's a port of an MSX game, and it's a nicely done game from beginning to end.

Power Strike II- Basically seen by some as the best shmup on the SMS. Top view like the first one, but everything got an upgrade. A quality game that should be played.

Fantasy Zone- A cutesy shmup that's deceptively hard. It's bright, colorful, and quite a bit of fun to play. Don't let the screenshots push you away.

Fantasy Zone II- More of the same, but with better graphics and more levels.

Others-

Phantasy Star- The best RPG on the SMS, and possibly the best 8-bit RPG period. Nice story, great graphics, catchy tunes, well done 3-D dungeons... it's a great game and should not be missed out on.

Spellcaster- An action RPG that's well made. It's the prequel to Mystic Defender on the Genesis/MegaDrive, and it's just an enjoyable play. Be sure to search things though, or you'll get stuck.

Rastan- Straight forward hack-n-slash adventure game. It's a port of the Taito arcade game, and a great job was done bringing it home on the Sega 8-bitter. A good challenge too, as the later levels are no cakewalk.

Shinobi- A very good port of Sega's classic ninja game.

Ninja Gaiden- Yes, there's an entry to this series on the SMS. Done by Sega, it's a whole new game... not an NES port. It's easier than the NES games, and not quite as cinema heavy, but it's still a fun game. Sega did a pretty good job on keeping the graphics similar to what everyone was used to on the NES.

Choplifter- This is a great port of the arcade game. Its graphics are pretty close to the arcade's (right down to the many layers of parallax on the first level), and it also has all the levels from the arcade (something a good number of ports lacked). It's a simple game that's a lot more challenging than it appears to be at first, and it's a lot of fun.

Scroll down the page and read carefully :P

As for SMS Gauntlet, there was even a feature on a recent issue of Retro Gamer which praised it.

Awesome man, you're recommending Shinobi for a Sega console -wow. I mean, I'm glad you did otherwise he might skip that one!
What I'm saying instead is that if he happens to like Impossible Mission, well he might be interested into knowing that the SMS version is good.

wow, im surprised to see that some people takes "port accuracy" seriously, personally, for me, if the port is "playable", it's ok for me :P

anyways, i jsut finished compiling the disc, it only took up 40mb's, so i added tons of Gamegear games, and the DC port of Noiz2sa as well :P

it's a long list, so im not gonna post it, but basically i took everything listed here, and added a lot more (mostly random downloading, testing, etc...)

surprisingly, Sagaia was amazing, i mean, it's smooth and slick, and has less flickers (unlike other SMS shmups), im a bit annoyed by teh black BG boss fights, but i guess, it's tolerable...

another amazing thing was, i found myself playing Chuka Taisen/CloudMaster the most, and to think my initial intention was to be able to play Aleste/PowerStrike2 on my DC :D...

and Zillion, man, how did i miss this game?! i love it, very metroid-esque, but still unique, plus it's credited to Tatsunoko! is that based on an anime/manga?

anyway, thanks people, keep the SMS talk comin' :D

Aerial Assault?
You do use SMEG right? That's my favorite emulator of all emulators, the user interface is fast, intuitive, remembers, plays GG and also has all important options.

nope, i used SMSPlus, many say it's the "better" SMS/GG emu for the DC, and i belive it is so, Gunstar and GG Aleste work like a charm, even Panzer Dragoon Mini

What I don't like about SMS Alien Syndrome is the screen-by-screen scrolling. Every stage is divided into so many rooms instead of being one contiguous area. Aliens also teleport into the room wherever and whenever they feel like it, making for a few cheap deaths.

Kenseiden is definitely a favorite of mine for the SMS. This is one I really wanted a Genesis sequel to. Two others would be Kung-fu Kid and Lord of the Sword.

Gangster Town is probably the best of the Light Phaser titles.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

For some reason I believe Kenseiden indeed HAD some sort of sequel, but with some other name.

Though I probably am thinking about some other game.
