Converting RGBHV, component to s-video, options?
After abandoning testing trying to get svideo output from rgbhv and component sources, I've started to get interested in it again using an old crt with svideo and composite only.
I've tried the Extron vsc scan converter which is excellent but has some screen tearing that seems worse with higher resolutions. I also have a component to svideo converter which is okay but has poor colors and noise.
The only other options I see are the rgb to ntsc encoder by linuxbot, a Russian diy kit on ebay, gbs 8100 or various other scan converters. I am also not clear on which ones support input from 480p or higher. I saw that the vga2ntsc only supports 15khz input.
I basically would like something closest to the vsc units but that has less screen tearing if possible.

Scan converters from other companies like Analog Way, Kramer, VineMicros/TVone etc etc are all pretty good, all comparable quality to Extron but may react better with your display. You'll only get 480i from them, though - 240p would be possible via GBS Control & one of those encoders you mentioned. Straight-up encoders only support 15kHz but should pass 480i and 240p fine, scan converters will take 31+ but not output 240p if that is what you are looking for.

Guys, one of my Hitachi buyers turned me on to this, which seems like an awesome unit. Would be worth checking out.

I own one of these and they are pretty good, though one quirk on it I found was that the D-Sub connector that takes RGBS/RGBHV doesn't seem to work with TTL RGBS, which seems kind of dumb to me because I feel like that's probably what most cases would call for when using that connector. Only the SCART/JP-21 connectors should expect video level IMO. In terms of the performance, I'd say that the s-video quality output is really great. The composite output is a bit noisy as far as what I tested goes, but still better than any other RGB to composite conversion (that's 240p compatible) that I've seen.
edit: one downside is that these take several months to be made and shipped.

I heard about the Axunworks a while ago and it looks really nice but expensive. It would be nice if they made a stripped down version without all the extra features.
I'm leaning more towards an encoder now instead of units that scale. A lot of the encoders are out of stock, I guess it's not that common to want ntsc output from rgb.

Good ol' linuxbot3000 has an RGB to S-Video and Composite transcoder. He's also got a component to RGB transcoder, so with the right device chain you can get just about anything to S-video. I asked him if the RGB to composite/S-video adapter had anything internal that would allow me to switch from NTSC to PAL encoding like the RGB-2YC but he didn't respond. That's a rare use case for me but may or may not be relevant to others.

Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

I was looking at the vga2ntsc and noticed it said it requires negative sync on the HV. I'm trying to think of the simplest way to do that. I have an ossc, gbs-c, and some component to vga transcoders. How can I make sure the sync polarity is negative and could doing something wrong cause damage to the vga2ntsc or monitor?
If I did something like ossc > Tendak hdmi to vga converter > vga2ntsc how can I tell what polarity the Tendak outputs? I know you can force negative sync with an rgb interface but I would prefer not to use one.

I used the SCART input on the Timeharvest Supergun for RGBS to composite and svideo. I had a sync stripper and an Extron RGB in the chain between the sources and the Supergun. It worked well. I don't normally have it my video chain, though. Just hooked it up one day to experiment with the Supergun.
