Can anyone recommend an S-VHS player?

Post by Odolwa »

I want to buy a super VHS player, a VCR that has S video capability. Can anybody recommend a good brand or a good model for me? The ones I own are the JVC HR-S3911 and the HR-S3600U, but the playback quality on the first one is not great, and the second one is very slow to rewind and fast forward. I don’t want a DVD combo, just SVHS please.

I've got a Mitsubishi HS-U778 and I really like it. According to the manual it includes a "digital dynamic comb filter" so expect a little bit of lag. Looked pretty nice with my LaserDisc player.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Is this issue REALLY big enough a deal to warrant spending another ~$300 USD just to shave a minute or less off of your time? If so, why not look into an external REW/FF device? Those can be found for so cheap.

Also, a non-gaming-oriented messageboard will probably have far more informed opinions to be found on stuff like this...

What messageboard do you recommend? People on here were able to help me find a good Hi-8 Camera, I don't see how getting a recommendation for a good S-VHS player on this forum has now become a problem.

It's not a problem! Just a suggestion - people here definitely do have good taste and informed opinions heh. Just that there's websites like VideoHelp, AVSForum, DigitalFAQ, doom9 etc etc which are more focused on video/movies versus games... but then again, sites like DigitalFAQ might convince some people to spend $1,500 on stuff like external Time Base Correctors - and that's a dark path to go down, lol

I’m not familiar with these devices, could you explain what they are and how they work?

Stand alone dedicated tape rewinders, they were sold to reduce wear and tear on the VCR itself. If FF is important you'd want a 2-way device, most are 1-way for rewinding specifically.

IMO a tape player that doesn't rewind/fast forward as swiftly is probably a good thing, motor and pulleys are not pushed as hard owing to mechanical longevity and it helps preserve the tape itself.
