PAL Wii to play Starblade in 60hz 480i with RGB SCART cable?

Post by Restart_Point »

I have a PAL Wii with Homebrew Channel.
I have a RetroGamingCables Pack-a-Punch Wii RGB SCart cable.
I used it initially for 240p on a CRT which works fine.
I now wonder if I can get it to put out PAL60 480i while playing a Japanese VC game: Starblade (Namco)
It can do this fine for PAL VC games, but not NTSC VC games.

I am not very knowledgeable on the Wii as there's only been a handful of games I wanted and I play it rarely till now. I'm starting to think this is not possible with this particular game, even with any of the WAD patching methods or Loader force-PAL60 methods, as I have tried a number of them over last couple days and none work, forcing PAL60 either by wad patching or by homebrew Loader just leads to a black screen and crashed Wii. The only successful and necessary patch that has worked so far is to region-free it to play on a PAL Wii in the first place, but that is not enough and the game plays in bright red through an RGB Scart cable (as expected).

Has anybody managed to get this exact game to work good in PAL60 480i with an RGB Scart cable on a PAL Wii?

(i'm aware that component cable is one way to do it, but that will require extra expense for display equipment which I don't have currently)

On side-notes....one niggle regarding this game is the annoying border around the play area, which would be bearable if it was black, but Namco (or someone) thought it was a good idea to put an animated wallpaper in it, which there us no option to disable! Is this common to VC games in general, or just this one?

Thanks!

If the game boots have you tried launching through usb loader gx with video mode set to system default in the game load settings.

I had the same red video issue with ntsc GameCube titles. Also using the same scart cable. System default video fixed it.

There are some NTSC-J titles (both Wii and VC) that simply won't work via SCART RGB, regardless of whether PAL60 is forced or not. Using component output is the easiest solution for those, though there may still be some that simply won't boot if the console region is PAL (though it is possible to change a Wii's region via homebrew).

Thanks for this, it made me reconsider the video mode setting in USB Loader GX. I had been trying to use various force-PAL settings, and "System Default" was giving me the black screen crash, so then I tried "Region Patch" and it works properly through the RGB cable now!

So happy now. Arcade version Starblade in nice clarity with wiimote aiming. As far as I know, this is the best way to play it outside the arcade.

Now I just need work out the best way to remove or hide the annoying animated border around the game....
