DemonStar Secret Missions 2

Post by PooshhMao »

Hi,

When exposed to the sort of scrutiny shmup players expose their games to, a fair amount of flaws surfaced in the original DemonStar, the spiritual successor to (and developed by the same people as) DOS sort-of classic Raptor (Hey, there was little competition, okay?), but as far as shmups developed somewhere else as Japan go, it went further than most.
Unfortunately the player usually did not - well at least I didn't - not managing to stay alive for long enough to power up adequately to keep the screen from filling up with baddies. With the larger ones usually having no-warning instant death lasers. Poor design choice that.

There's a new version out, I'm a bit reluctant to call it a fullblown sequel, but it looks very pretty indeed, and you'd be excused for thinking this was a Seibu game

I bought the full version some 2 or 3 years ago, just for being so impressed by the graphics. But gameplay-wise, this game doesn´t do anything for me. It´s pretty badly balanced, has an unfinished feel to it. Which is sad because the graphics would deserve a better game.

Some helpful suggestions for Demonstar 2 PC shmup demo...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

For PooshhMao,

Upon downloading this Demonstar 2 PC shmup demo, it does remind me of a certain Seibu Kaihatsu arcade game by the name of Viper Phase 1. Viper Phase 1 came in two different flavors: Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. version and Viper Phase 1 - New Version. I do have the Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. version myself and like the consistant 60 frames per second framerate of that SP1 arcade motherboard powered shmup classic. ^_~

1.) Can the framerate of Demonstar 2 be ramped up to arcade-quality framerate of 60 frames per second framerate? (You'd then have a very silky smooth Demonstar 2 game engine at that particular framerate). ^_~

2.) Also, can Demonstar 2 be rendered as a fully vertical-oriented screen setup (like that of the arcade PCB based shmup titles that display in Tate'd mode)?

Addressing those two above listed issues and you've got a potential PC shmup winner here. ^_~

Take a look at the Japanese made PC shmup title of "Rally Raid"...that shmup gaming engine runs at a silky smooth 60 fps (which is pushing it to the limit). ^_~
